    barra help needed

hi Guys oh and gals, I have my grandfather coming to Brisbane hopefully in September and his life long dream has been to catch a barramundi, now this may be his last chance with his health ever deteriorating.

Being based in Brisbane my options are somewhat limited but i have heard a little bit on the barra farm at BLI BLI, can anyone help me out with whether this is a viable option this time of year or am i wasting my time. I am open to any suggestions that you may have. thanks in advance Lee

    Re: barra help needed

Hey there... With the warmer weather at the moment I'm planning to go on Saturday or Sunday.. Forecast of 26 degrees on saturday and 29 degrees on sunday.

I'll let you know how I go.

That said, my best hookup rate at the barra park was a day we threw out unweighted large green prawns cut in half, second to that my trusty old X-Raps... In my opinion, don't even bother with the pellets.

Hi Lee the park should be fishing ok by September mate. Give them a call to see what they have been up to with regards to stocking etc.

If going to Monduran or Awoonga i'd get a guide straight up mate they are hard enough to catch without any help. Impoundment barra are fickle at times.

I hope your Grandfather achieves his dream of catching a barra mate, it's a great dream to have.

    Cheers Lyndon.

ps before you go fishing try and look at the weather to see if you can get a stable weather window e.g. no quick cold changes. With the El Nino type weather we are having now September should be a good month to go fishing mate.

    I agree with Lyndon,

    Lee,

Have a go at the impoundments with a guide...you wont regret it. In september the fish should be hammering...so a good guided would almost certainly get you on fish. Also saves you buying heaps of gear, paying for the barra park, and worrying about finding fish etc etc. For the unfortunate circumstance your in with grandfathers health, I think it would be money well spent for the thrill and the memory be worth every penny. All the best which ever way you chose Lee.

    cheers Steve

I'll chime in and say that your chances of landing a barra are MUCH higher at the barra park, not to mention much cheaper at $35 for the day... If gear is an issue I'm sure I can help out in some way.

That said, you probably won't land a 120cm man eating silver submarine as most at the barra park seem around the 60cm-90cm mark.. They're still great fun especially if you fish light. Fighting a barra on 6-10lb is great fun.

Yeah mate, PM if you want to borrow some gear for the day. I don't have premium outfits, but they'll get the job done none the less.

    UPDATE
The time has come we are going to the barra farm on Monday 14th, hopefully will get him his barra and it can fulfil his dream, has anyone been up there lately and what has been the best tactics to get one.
If we fish bait, eg prawns as suggested, what hooks should be used. I have never fished this way before so I would guess a 3/0 or 4/0 hook but stand to be corrected. Any help would be appreciated guys, cheers Lee

    Re: barra help needed

    Hi Lee,

I went there a couple of weeks ago and only landed the one barra on prawn all day, that said the fish were still pretty lethargic and they hadn't put the new fish in yet. Plenty in there though, they drag netted one little corner to move some fish and out came over a dozen in one hit.

Last I heard they were getting 500kg of new 'stock' back on the 31st of August. If that's happened it means there are a couple of hundred fish in there which aren't shy to hit bait/lures. Last time that happened we were hooking up just about all day.

Grab some aussie caught/farmed large prawns from wherever you can find them at a good price and slide them onto about 2/0 hooks.
You could also try throwing a few lures. I've found cheap as chips Mojiko (Anaconda) X-Rap knock offs in bright colours go well there, as do many other smaller minnows of around 60-80mm.

Oh, with bait and lures you're more likely to have success in the main 'barra creek'. The fish in the bigboys pond are well educated, will only take pellets and can generally spot wich pellets have hooks in them.
The mixed species pond seems hit and miss, I've not caught anything from it yet, but the stories I've heard are impressive.

I use them peeled and halved, fits nicely onto a 2/0 hook.

Hi lethal, it sounds like you only want to travel a short distance sunny coast is that right ? the barra park doesnt sound like action fishing ,might fire in the hotter weather maybe i dont know anything about it but sounds like you have to be very patient these fish get a lot of pressure ,i dont brag about pond donkeys but they are fun to catch
if your keen to travel up north a few hours give us a pm and i may be able to chase something up ,but i think barra fire more like october/nov ,cheers
