Raby Bay Mixed Bag
Hi
Up at 5 am and off to Raby Bay to catch the first part of the run out tide with hopes high (as always).
First cast with a bait of sandworm and a little bream was landed. Not a bad start however things went quiet after that.
The second rod was rigged with a 1/3rd of a pilchard on a 3/0 hook and a quick change of location saw a big strike and then the line went slack. Wound in and the 3/0 was gone.
First keeper for the day arrived soon after on the first rod baited with squid, a 25cm bream.
Soon after another good strike on the pilchard cubes and this time the 3/0 hook found its mark and the 10lb leader held and a 32cm tailor was the result. it was hooked through the top of the head so did not have a chance to bite me off.
As the tide was receding I decided to pump a few yabbies and put the rod baited with squid in the holder. Looked over between pumps to see a good bend in the rod. A fight of a minute or so ensued only to have a tailor around the same size as the fisrt one make it all the way to about 2 metres from the bank before biting through the 10lb leader and disappearing back to the depths. I am sure he smiled at me as he did it.
Rebaited with a strip of squid and went to pump more yabbies. After a short time had elapsed I went to check the rod to see if it needed rebaiting only to feel a bit of weight. Wound it in and on the end was a 30cm flounder - my biggest yet. It must have eaten the bait and resumed its spot in the sand as there was no indication a fish was on.
Not long after another bigger bend in the rod and a fight of a minute or so. This fish was definitley larger than the first but again the fish suddenly let go and the rig cam back with no hook. This happened for a third time about 15 minutes later.
I came home with a feed, but disappointed I did not have a stronger leader to withstand the tailor bites. I think I was lucky to land the one I got. I will be better prepared next time.
Regards
Chris

Nice little catch! Yeah those flounder are hard to tell if they are on sometimes.. They just kinda suck the bait in and dont strike at it, then they are very dosile on the reel in... like a dead weight with no head shaking... sort of like a sting ray or even a shovenose. Just something weighty on the end of the line...
