Swains Reef tips for Reds and Trout
I am chasing as much information on best tips for catching Trout and Reds at the Swains, eg rigs, baits, lures water depth ect. I will be tacking my Furuno 620 sounder with me, so what sort of ground do the reds live in?

Yep big baits work well. Just make sure you hang on because when they hit you'll know about it. When I went to the swains I used 50lb braid, 24kg rod and daiwa saltist reel and on the first day it landed everything.

Re: Swains Reef tips for Reds and Trout
hi mate out swains for trout big 8 0 hook on a runing rig and half pillies untill they start bitting then go a full bait . if there little current i used a split shot sinker just enough to help it float down. local bait of area sometimes 2, if you can, get a view bucket it will help heaps as you can pull your bait away from the crap
as for reds find a reef drop off 20mts plus with rubble or ferns ,a patanoster rig with 8 o circle hooks with big baits on at least 50 lbs should be good for both.
i used 50lbs shnidder fire line .
also put out a 200lbs handline on a rubber tube tied up to back of boat in a bit of current and lob a pillie out there are some awsome spanish out there this sets hooks and near stops em dead iv cought em upto 30kgs ....
hope this helps ge i wish i was going lol/
let me know how you go
cheers wayno

Re: Swains Reef tips for Reds and Trout
A view bucket is a must for trout and a fifty pound handline with running sinker to the hook, work your preasure points around the reef watch the tide split around the edges, find the bait and the trout will be close. Fish with the least amount of lead as possilble, use a 7/0 hook mustard. If your in a dory have a look around the weather face of the reef, watch the breakers one tipped me over once but plenty of fish. If the weather is a bit shitty go up into the reef and look around the bommies there they all hold trout. Depending on which part of the swains you go to will determine where you look for reds, you will have to find structure in at least 40m and in most areas at this depth it is just sand, the reef drop offs hold fish but mostly red throat emperor and hussar with trout mixed in. Reds are out on the shoals but are hard to find. Enjoy your trip, I describe the swains as fishermans hevan.
