What is the angle of view for a sounder?

I am relatively new to boating, and in using the sounder that came with our boat, I am not sure as to what the sounder is actually "seeing".

Does it provide a view of an arc straight down and out to the sides? or does it look forward as well? or is it a sort of downward facing cone shape?

when it is indicating a fish swimming across the screen, what direction is the fish travelling? or is the display a "historical" read akin to an oscilloscope display?

    Sounder is a lowrance x52

    All thoughts welcome

    Cheers

If your sounder has the 200khz transducer I believe it is 20 degrees and it is projected down as a cone shape.

    Hi Taz,

Grab yourself a copy of Depth Sounder Secrets by Rick Huckstepp - Great investment, explains how sounders work, and more importantly, how to use them.

Also have a read through the sounder sticky thread - http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/showthread.php?t=58431
