I see the winning whiting at the Moreton Bay Classic went 970 grams, the bloke who weighed it in also had another 2 big ones( 790gr and 806gr), very big whiting for this time of year.
Any clues on where old mate might have got them as the general run from the Coomera and Nerang is around the 600-650gr for very good size whiting(40-42cm).

i saw a photo of that whiting next to my mates, my mates was longer than the 900g+ one but his only weighed 600ish. makes you wonder how a whiting can get so fat (i'll try and get the photo) in a tidal area, unless it was from some old prawn ponds or a tank! i hope no one in our fishing community would stoop to that.

I would be very suprised if they did not come from a landlocked body of water.
I believe this would have been against the Classics rules so who knows where they came from. It has certainly raised a few eyebrows though

Probably a silly question from a novice, but I'm genuinely interested to ask where/how whiting that big could be caught in a landlocked situation?
Hi Beaross, i will reply to your post as i believe you are genuine in asking.
There are plenty of lakes in s/e QLD that hold massive fish mainly whiting up to 1kg and bream up to 2.5kg, they are unable to escape these enclosures and with no current and plenty of food they grow to enormous size but are usually not very long in comparable length to a wild fish.
Jurrasic lake was the first of these lakes to be fished, then the lakes at the Calypso Bay complex at Jacobs Well.
These 2 lakes are fished out now but there are plenty of others, there are lakes on land owned by private individuals such as prawn farms and private marinas.
All these places are out of bounds in fishing competitions but rumours abound of people fishing these areas, while fishing comps have rules prohibiting this there is no one to police them.

you are right youngy. 2 years ago the redland bay comp in june had a whiting tht was 38 cm long and weighed 880gms. it was slightly darker than normal and had to have from a lake. they could not prove and had to accept the fish as a winner under much duress.. thats why they changed the whiting division to longest now not heaviest... keeps the bars$#@#s honest...
