    Re: Which Battery?

i have 2 standard deep cylce batteries in my boat nad have had for over 4 years now, i cant see the reason for marine grade batteries, and at nearly half the price i will certainly keep going that way, what sort of time frame will you be using these items, just overnight or multiple days??? do you not have an option to charge of motor??? My batteries are 100amp hour and cost under $150. cheers Lee

    Hi Lee,

Can you tell me which brand your batteries are, as I will be using them mainly for single overnight trips.

And the fact that a 35amp hour they are charging me $189.

    Cheers, Nick

    Re: Which Battery?

You have to be careful with old battery chargers, most were just a very crude device with no regard to float voltages etc. New chargers have 3-4 stages and look after the battery properly and can be left connected indefinitely as they will go into float mode. The old ones can do damage if left on too long.

    Re: Which Battery?

If that's all your going to use the battery for (no starting ot Minn-Kota) I recon you should get somthing like 50 to 70 AH deep cyc. Lead acid are the cheepest and would suit your charger.

    Re: Which Battery?

I use the same as TJ - Optima AGM. Sure they are more expensive but no risk of electrolyte spill, expect twice the service life of a flooded cell and are available in deep cycle/cranking combo.

If you go for an AGM then you will need to get a decent multi stage charger such as a Ctek 3600 or above

    Re: Which Battery?

how long will you be running your accesories at time ? I run nav lights, a fluro, sounder and baittank pump from a tiny 12a/h deep cycle battery...I've only run it for about 5-6 hrs at a time (lights and all)and never lost power with it for about over 2 years now. I can do camping and run just the sounder and pump for a good few days without a recharge. I use a 100a/h for my leccy motor.
