    G'day

Having looked at them pretty closely, I don't think you could go past the icom M33.

handhelds are OK, but not very powerful, they have to be low powered because of some sort of law requirement, but they work, they do not need to be installed, and you can have it in your car, park on a hill overlooking the Ocean and listen to the "chatter", or take it to another boat, so they have a place, but because of low pwer and low altitude on the antenna, (you are holding it) the range is limited.

Thanks guys - I only have a 4m hornet so wont be venturing very far & only on perfect days. But some of the islands/reefs out off Coffs are just past the 2nm rulings and therefore require one.

Dont have the room or inclination to fit a permanant radio - thought the handhelds would be OK for the job.

They are, but waterproof, and they float.... and top quality. I was looking at one for my 12 footer as I often run over to moreton in it, and fish mud regularly from manly.

I saw posts on this while finding information on Lowrance fish finder chart plotters. It was in one of the Bass Boat or Hull Truth Forums. They were saying Icom and Standard Horizon. Not sure of prices but they were picking Icom M72 and the S/horizon HX280, Hx 750 and HX850.

These links will give some info on the sets I mentioned. With links for more detail.
I am not recommending the shops listed as I have had no dealing with them just for the information there. You can get mot of this locally or on Ebay AU or Ebay U.S.A. cheers

The ICOM M-35 might be a good option. $150 cheaper than the M-72 - battery smaller, not as water proof (but still submersible) and a few less bells and whistles.

    Cheers
