GPS data from Lowrance to Garmin and back again ???

    Gents,

This is what we're looking to do - has anyone done it and can someone give us the easy way to do it.

I have a Lowrance 527c with a navionics card. Phil has a Garmin 172c running the Garmin Bluechart card. We're looking to take the marks from my unit putting them on to Phil's unit and eventually putting them all back on mine.

This is the way I see it but I'll let someone tell me otherwise if need be.

Phil runs oxiexplorer or something similar on his PC. I download my marks onto a blank SD card from the unit and Phil adds them to his GPS computer program. These are saved to a blank garmin card and put into his unit. we then do the reverse to get them back to me

Does this sound feasible. Do I need oziexplorer as well?

    Brett,

I have both the units you mention and do this regularly. Yes your logic for moving the marks around is correct.

Ok, so to clarify a couple of things.

You are both able to get your data to a computer, download from the units to the data cards? If you have got that far then it is fairly straight forward.

The lowrance uses an SD card, so easy, the garmin has a unique data card and requires the garmin data card programmer (usb interface to the card interface, Like a usb hub)

If not stop and sort this out first, you need to be able to transfer the data from your unit to a computer.

    Before you start

*** make a copy of the data files somewhere else, burn them to a CD if necessary ***

Once you have done this double check, then tripple check befor you start.

There is a program called GPSU, it can directly convert the data. you can download GPSU as a free version but will only do 100 or so marks, pay the 70 bucks and by the software.

Now you first need to merge the data or you will destroy what is on the garmin, so copy the .gdb file to a place on your computer, use gpsu to open the file, from the file menu select merge, select the .usr file from your 127. it will merge the two files.

Save the file as a garmin file, and reload it on your unit.

To get back to the 527 open the garmin file save it as a Lowrance .usr file copy it to your data card, now on your unit you will need to erase the existing marks then load the marks from your data card.

Sounds complicated but is not really that bad.

    Honda.

Second what Honda says, think also the process may destroy the icons and revert them to standard, only matters if you use them specificly for ordering of you waypoints? not totally sure on this as it's been a while (happy while) since i used the program.

I have a feeling that you can save the points in *.gpx format and trasfer them to the other unit and back again.

GPSU, gives you the ability to change the icons, get the basics first before delving in too deep,

it doesnt destroy the icons, however the new marks will have black squares as icons (your orignal mark icons remain from the merged data on the garmin), you can change later with the software when you get yourself sorted.

The GPSU software gives you the option to change the icons in bulk, but best get the basics first then work on the bells and wistles. When you transfer the data back to the Lowrance might be a time to have play with the icons.

The GPX (gpx exchange format) is a standard that allows data to be interchanged by units that support the format. Suggest best option is not to introduce a third conversion for now (maybe useful to you at a later date for another device).

    Regards
    Honda.

    Thanks guys.

I have mapsource on the puter and 2 blank cards ( Garmin dedicated ). I also have the USB PROG...

I think Brett will understand more about this than I will, so will let him run with it.

    This program will do it

    G7toWin

G7ToWin is the Swiss Army knife of the GPS world. This free utility program works with most all brands of popular GPS receivers. With this Windows program, you can
    • Upload waypoints, routes, and tracks to your GPS receiver.
    • Download waypoints, routes, and tracks to your computer.
    • Edit waypoint, route, and track data in a spreadsheet-style window.
    • Create waypoints, routes, and tracks.
    • Save waypoints, routes, and tracks in different file types. (Remember that GPS receiver and software manufacturers all use a number of different file formats for waypoints, routes, and tracks.)
    • Save the image that appears onscreen of many Garmin GPS receivers.
