Uglyfish,
Mate we had 2 stand up on us sunday morning @ sth passage nth channel, right at the end of the Bar on at the bottom of the low, the bar itself was fine, we turned north outside the breakers and inside the outer bank.
The first one started to break, so we got over it quick the second one we didnt see was really close behind it, had no time to do anything but get the nose into the wave, around the 1.7 mtr mark and ready to break, suffice to say the Yalta got air, gave us a fright thou, hit the water and I hit the throttle hard to get out of there.
Never take that bar crossing lightly.
Ps did hear on the radio that a boat was doing well in close for snapper around boat rock, dont know the boat or how true that was but he was calling his mate in from deep.
Regards
HOnda
opps seems as though this thread got posted twice in here and offshore..wtf???
any way thanks honda,il follow another boat threw haha
uglyfish,
wednesday looks like being a lovely day out there.
1 metre of swell will make the bar almost non-existant.
hondas experience does happen especially on the low which will be around 8 am on wednesday. the swell at the end of the bar seems to come out of nowhere when you think you are through it so just stay alert and pick a path well ahead.
there should be enough clean water out there to cross it easily on wednesday.
there should also be enough boats to piggy back on, given the predicted conditions.
i will be crossing it around 6.30 so i will keep an eye out for you.
matty.
Thanks matty il be xing about the same time mate,i might piggy back behind you mate.i opperate on ch 71 on vhf and my boats the one in my avatar its called reel affair..
Yeah good question leighton..Any one got the answer???
I would say 100-200m behind, just close enough to follow the same line. Otherwise, at least 50m to one side and a bit behind if the channel is wide enough - this would apply for Amity channel, but not North entrance at Sth Passage.
BTW, I fished the boat/shag rock area a couple of weeks ago. Heaps of livies around Shag, and I picked up a couple of snapper near boat rock on plastics.

sweet thanks jeremy, any chance of cobia being about??
uglyfish,
i would say that about 150 metres is a good distance to follow.
any closer and the lead boats wash will foul the swell/chop and make it too difficult to judge what is ahead of you.
gets a bit tricky when following having to watch water and other boats at the same time, but as long as you and your deckie keep eyes everywhere you will be all good.
as said previously a life jacket will not only keep you safer but will make you feel a little easier while crossing. you can even do what i did on my first crossing, put the epirb down your pants.
matty
hahaha dont have an epirb just yet, dont really need one to go to boat, but il be getting one asap..thanks for the advise guys...just cant wait to give this place a bash, sick of running all about the bay for nothing
Uglyfish,
Don't know about you but I certainly wouldn't be heading out through the South Passage without an EPIRB. What is the cost of an EPIRB compared to your crew or your own life/lives?
Here is the map of where EPIRBS are required, in my opinion much better to have one especially if on a good day you want to sneek out a bit further.
