    Boat Storage - Brisbane

    Hi,

Just throwing the big question out there once again - is anyone familar / using any undercover storage facilities for boats in the Brisbane area?

We have been looking for 18+ months and have not been able to find anything.

If anyone has any ideas / thoughts I would appreciate your feedback.

    Re: Boat Storage - Brisbane

    G'day,

I posed this many months ago and didn't get much of a response.

I was considering leasing a premises that could house 30+ boats. Value add services would be boat cleaning, access to an engine flushing tank, basic maintenance and taking boats to and from servicing agents or allowing access to owners preferred servicing agents.

The premises would have a back to base security system, a good security locker for each owner, pass key access and be accessible 24-7.

I was considering trying to make a business out of it. There must be lots of people with a boat wanting to move into town-houses and units but facing the prospect of having to sell the boat.

We'll see what the response is this time.

    Regards,

    Ocean Spirit,
There are a number of facilities in the Brisbane area where boats can be stored. Unfortunately most are not under cover, or if they are, as I found, have limited access hours which is not at all convenient.
I opted for storage at "Port of Brisbane Storage" at Lytton (out in the open) and invested in a custom made full cover.
There is on occassions a waiting list, however there is a wash down facility and 24hr key pad access together with on site management all at reasonable cost.
PM me for more details if you like.
    Regards,
    Camboy

    Re: Boat Storage - Brisbane

    Thanks for the responses guys.

I did look into the outdoor storage (hardstand) option, but I can't see what benefit I was gaining by electing to go that way (as opposed to leaving in the yard) with the poly-tarp cover on, nothwithstanding the fact that the boat would be out of the yard!

White Pointer, I think you are ahead of your time with your idea - there are a lot of people who own boats in Brisbane (plus a growing population) with no option but to leave outdoors, or at a marina on the racks (and then still find a place to keep the trailer).

With apartment living and limited storage at many new houses, I think boat storage will be a big industry. People spending $50K - $100K on a trailerboat don't want to leave it sitting out in the sun!

Even without the value-add offerings, I think if you had a new new tilt panel facility, with great height access and easy turn-around access, with lanes for each boat, and as you said, a lock-up storage box behind each boat, many people would go for it. Even with 5AM - 5PM access, people can plan to pick up there boats (or stay open until 7PM on a Friday night).

With strong security, gated access, and a full-time person on staff to run an identity check and ensure they are hooking up the right boat, I think most people would be prepared to pay for a good facility, knowing that there boat is protected and out of the sun. The issues are location, and you can't afford to go too far from the CBD (land price / leasing then may really eat into your margin).

There is a group up at Airlie Beach www.boattel.com.au that are offering something along the same lines. They offer 24 hour access (individual lock-up bays) with wash-down facilities, etc, for an annual price of $250 per month! That's pretty good value if you ask me!

I have no connection to this establishment, might be worth an enquiry if it is local.
Have seen some 20ft+ boats in here while driving past.

Thanks mate, I'll give it a try. A lot of the places have outside storage (at a premium I'll add), but not many offer something undercover. Once I find something, I'll be sure to put it up here, and hopefully save a lot of others the ground-work looking around.

    Re: Boat Storage - Brisbane

    G'day,

    Ocean_Spirit,

Thanks for promoting this and for specific comments on my proposal. My last round of inquiries led me to believe there wasn't a business in it and (as you said) I may be ahead of my time. But I'm in the same situation as you and need to spend over $80,000 in demolition and construction to house boats, cars and keep a workshop.

However, it may be an opportunity for a cooperative. That means most of the value add services are foregone but the security could be maintained as well as 24-7 access.

I welcome more posts on this idea. My plan was to establish it on the Redcliffe Peninsula, probably in the Clontarf industrial precinct. It's close to Scarborough boat harbour and there is fairly easy access to good roads to haul to Mooloolaba. It doesn't address the south side but we are a very divided city in terms of access - just like Sydney and Melbourne.

I see this is a very old post, but is there still interest in undercover storage and some associated services?

    Cheers
