Aussie$ creeps up, time for a new gps/sounder

    G,day
Ive waited twelve months and finally have a lazy $ or two.

    I think I want either a Raymarine A57D @ $1500 aud, OR A70d @ $1800aud.P&H not included
That's the best deal i can see on the net at the moment .
Does anyone know if there is a better buy out there at the moment on these units????.

I expect the$ AUD to stay up and maybe improve over the next couple of days so I want to buy it now. This cash is burning a hole

    Cheers

    Rando,

Try ch smith dot com dot au. They have a warehouse/store in Melbourne and offer free shipping according to their website. I've never used them, but they sure look inexpensive.

I have used CH SMITH before. Not bad. Get their price off the net and ask your local to match it. If the local cant, then use CH. My local fella, Robin at Modern Marine always matches the net prices for me and I buy everything through him because of that.
Always stay local if you can.

I think I saw that Furuno have a cash back offer on at the moment too. Download the form from them .
I think it is $150 for the 585 and $100 for the 620.

The Aussie will be up a lot longer than that mate. I recon you'll be kicking your self in a few months if you can hold up but don't.

I'm hearing good things about the new lowrance he units. Have a look at them.

You are liable for import duty (gst) over $A1,000. Factor this in to the landing price. Better bet would be to have separate GPS and sounder under $1k each on different orders unless the shipping cost is huge.

Just get the seller to declare it as under $1000. Most sellers don't have an issue with doing it.

I just bought a Furuno FCV 620 from Cascade GPS and used it today for the first time.....awesome sounder....why spend heaps on a GPS..? a fix is a fix is a fix....? I guess a 585 would be better but in my small boat the 620 was like a TV screen. Personally I would never go combo but thats a preference thing entirely of course

    Thanks Chris.
My post related more to the Idea that " a fix" was all that the chartplotter was capable of.
I agree that stand alone units are the way to go if possible, and I concede that my A65 gets used almost exclusively in chartplotter mode.
I dont think though that you could argue against the fact that the modern chartplotter itelf is an extremely useful ADJUNCT to navigation. ie in addition to other sources of information.
    (compass, charts etc)
The ability to store information on tracks, plan routes , store and sort waypoints, access tidal information and bathymetric data is extremely useful.(in addition to being able to gain a "fix"on your location)
    IMHO anyway.

If you are getting a sounder thats over$1000 get them to seperate the transducer and send seperately. The cost of posting 2 parcels is cheaper than the import tax.
If you declair the unit to be less than the price you paid for it to avoid the tax and it gets damaged they wont pay the differance.
When I brought my GPS thats what I had to do I got the card send seperatly.

Going by the prices you listed in post#1, chsmith in Melbourne are cheaper than Cascade for the A57D and only marginally more expensive for the A70D. You would also avoid the extra costs associated such as freight and import duty. No splitting of orders also.

Going by the Raymarine website, these units appear to have the cartography preloaded. This could complicate things if you bought a unit with the incorrect maps preloaded from the states (say the storeman picked the wrong stock to send), and add additional costs if you needed to purchase a card for them upon arrival. Buying local would avoid this I would think.

The other option is to do what NEWBY suggested in post#3, and give the local bloke a shot which will also avoid freight and import duty.

Just my 2 cents worth - again.
