    Sounder Mounting Ideas

    Hey Guys
I'm planning on a HDS5 for the tinny and looking for mounting ideas. The boat is a 15' Stessel HD, tiller steer.
    Thanks
    Alan

I'd make sure this unit was placed where it wouldn't be jarred or bounced around very often.

    Hey mate,

I just installed a HDS5 on a RAM mount bracket on my dash last night as I didnt have the dash space to fit two sounders side by side and I gotta say, even though they arent cheap, they are excellent quality! It is is a double ball jointed arm so you can adjust your sounder to just about any position you want. And because the ball joints are rubber coated, they take out a lot of the shock of boating vibration. I got a RAM111 because I needed about 200mm lift on mine to get over my other screen but if you are mounting in the open there is one that Bias have in their catalog at the moment for $69 that has a 130mm overall height. I know you were looking for a location more than a method, but one of these should open up a few extra possibilities for mounting locations. Good luck!

    G'day

RAM mount it off of the underside of the side decks or have some 1/2'' tube welded in and mount off of that.

I know it is not the same sounder, but this is the set up the previous owner made.

Yeh alan ill get you a photo of my sounder box, will give you a good starting point on what you want to do. Me and all my mates have them in our boats as they are so practical especially if you do a lot of moving around in your boat.

Very simple design but very robust.ill pm it to you tomorrow arvo after i get back from fishn.

    Hey Big One,
Do you ever have any prob with your GPS picking up a signal?
I've mounted a couple on my boats over the years and the instructions have always said to mount the antenna where it has 90 degree of clear range above. I guess so it can pick up multiple satellites at the same time. Sometimes I've gone to a lot of trouble to mount it where it can get that 90 degree so I'm keen to know if you're getting good reception and I've been wasting my time.
    Cheers

Mike Delisser, reception is ok, however it does seem to take awhile to pick up a signal, and it has occasionally dropped out and back again. I was thinking of moving it to ontop of the perspex cover, but not sure if that would be a secure location. Where have you mounted yours?

I mounted my GPS antenna flush on the side deck a few feet forward of the console and ran the cable back under the deck. It gets a 100% signal as it's quite exposed but they're pretty tough units and I haven't had a prob yet.

heres my sounder box, just a fully welded/sealed box with sounder mounted in it with a perspex lid. very simple but it is very solid and when im done with lookin at the sounder i just push the box away as it is on a pivot on the rolick of me boat.
