Their advice was great, and in conjunction with the "alantani" website photos, the TLD was an easy service.

I have 7 TLD's now, so was well worth my while learning how to do it myself. Certainly not difficult, but a few pointers were required to get going.

    7 TLD's!!!
There might be a TLD anonymous group that you could join.
Is this not an obsession??? WOW!

Mate, with that many, it could certainly save you some well earned money to do this yourself.
BUT, on the other hand, that is a lot of time to spend in the shed doing them all.
For all we know, you might have 23 X 6500 baitrunners!!!

    Cheers, Jason.

There is a ausfish member on the north side near Strathpine named Ken Burgess (ph 07 3882 0562 or 0427 832 618) that runs a small bussines that services/repairs reels and repairs rods at a very good price. He has done work on some of my reels and i have always been very happy with the results.

    Cheers Chris

TLD reels are very simple to service yourself. And you'll get to know what makes them tick which is very handy if things go wrong.

Have a look at Alan Tani's fantastic web site http://alantani.com/ which shows you how to do it in detail with photos and he is happy to advise on his forum.

Alan recommends changing from the standard Shimano drag washers to Carbontex carbon fibre. These are available from here http://www.jackerskine.com/index.html and they have Cal's washer grease for $10 a bottle. TLD20 washers are about $40 a set. Jack's wife got the gear to me overnight.

When I recently did mine I changed to Carbontex washers and Cal's grease and used the Valvoline blue grease (as used on my trailer bearings) for the gears and screw threads and had some very light reel oil for the spinning parts. Tools needed are a small flat head and phillips screw drivers and about 1 hour of time to be thorough. Just lay everything out across a tea towell as you dismantle. Nothing fiddly on the TLDs.

The reels feel much better but yet to be tested on a reef trip.

Now I'm looking for bigger handles which Jack Erskine is helping with.
