    External Vs Internal GPS Antenna

Is there any evidence to support my theory that an external GPS antenna would be a better option than the new internal models that are coming out eg(HDS).
With an internal antenna in a GPS that is in under a plate hardtop would there be any interferance from the obstruction. I would have thought not a drama if it was mounted on a center console.

Any info would be appreciated as I have to make a choice relatively quickly.

I have a HDS5 under a aluminium targa and it gets a GPS fix quicker than my 337c DF which has a GPS antenna on the roof of the targa. I was pretty suprised but the internal antennae seem pretty bloody good on those HDS units! Of course how it would work for you would all depend on your mounting location and configuration of your cabin. I know that it is small consellation if you have just forked out the cash for a HDS but you can always add the LGC4000 antenna later if you arent happy with the GPS connectivity.

Thanks Traveso, I would buy the HDS if the internal antenna is as good as the 5200c s external one.

I can get my hands on a cheap unused 5200c and wanted to compare the accuracy of the two units.

Re: External Vs Internal GPS Antenna

    1. There has been much work done which supports what is more than a theory regarding any GPS antenna that has the possibility of being influenced by surrounding influences.

    2. An internal is a internal antenna and no amount of design counters the affect of surrounding influences.

    3. Internal GPS antenna designs are more a matter of convenience and certainly not necessarily equivalent to an external antenna which has a full sky view guaranteed at all times.

Thanks for your input SatNav.So are you suggesting that the external antenna is the way to go because of the full sky view.
I am yet to be convinced that an internally mounted antenna inside a GPS would be of the same speed and accuracy as an externally mounted antenna.
The GPS relies on satelites to position the boat in relation to the amount that the GPS picks up.
If the internlly mounted antenna are so good why do radome get fixed to the highest point on the boat.None of these are internal are they?

Re: External Vs Internal GPS Antenna

    1. Dunny there are so many different variables involved in this that there is simply no one solution or answer to the issues of internal v external

    2. To remove all and any reception problems then there is simply nothing that will replace any antenna that has a total view of the sky at ALL times with the emphasis being TOTAL VIEW at ALL TIMES and this is the most simple basic requirment that many forget to realize

    3. While there are enough visible satellites with enough signal strength then internal or external makes little difference but with an internal antenna depending on the surrounding environment then this can not always be guaranteed.
