    Wind Direction and Fishing

    Hey guys,

Not sure if this has been covered before but after reading a couple of recent threads it got me thinking what everyone's take is on Wind Direction and how it affects your fishing.
A few people have said don't bother fishing if there is a W in the direction??? Is there any other old wives tales that you swear by?
    Any feedback would be great.

    Cheers

If you stay home because the wind is from the west, you have no chance at all in catching a fish. Plenty of great fish are caught in winds from the west. If it blew westerly for the next 5 yrs straight, the fish would die of starvation if we believed that tale.
The wind chapter is a huge topic,,,,where do you start?

well we never catch any fish on northerly winds but yes it could be that it is a concidence everytime but for us they dont seam to fire as well so we dont bother goin out anymore on the light northerly forecasts.

N'ly are apparently no good but we've done alright a few times, also caught nothing plenty of times with a SE. I'm not that convinced fish won't play in a N'ly.

It certainly sucks when anchored and the current and wind are opposite directions swirling around.

Back in my rock fishing days (Sydney) many a winters session was had with a westerly blowing ........ & we still caught fish

You need to think about your fishing (the water is clearer & you have less water movement = spooky fish)........ so lighter line & leaders + smaller hooks ruled ( berley , berley , berley) ......... sunrise & sunset often produced the goods.

So yeh .... its not easy but if you apply yourself - fish can be caught

    Chris
Give a man a fish & he will eat for a day !
    Teach him how to fish
& he will sit in a boat - & drink beer all day!

Your not wrong mate, nothing gives me the sh1ts more than when you anchor perfectly on your drop and watch your burley trail dissapear back under the boat.

Well said Chris, application I guess is the way to go.In the Bay anything with westerly in it seems to make the fish very wary. The geography of the area makes north westerlies very uncomfortable and sometimes dangerous for smaller boats.Last weekend the water was very clear and catching a feed required some thought and skill(not this black duck out fished by the wife again)
But I enjoyed the day out with the Lady Anne and our grandson Jordan.

    Re: Wind Direction and Fishing

I know some old beach Tailor fishermen who swear by " Wind from the east, fish the least, wind from the west, fish the best". I've heard that Jacks love a northerly on a humid summer night. These sayings must have come from somewhere... it just might be that the particular "somewhere" isn't the bay or estuary or reef you're fishing in/on. Fish are funny creatures that we don't fully understand. How come you can catch a a good haul in one spot on one day, and get a doughnut doing exactly the same the next day?

IMO it depends on what you are fishing for. Sometimes a strong wind blowing onshore for a few days will bring more surface orientated bait schools toward the shore and bays(good for pelagics), but that doesn't make a lick of difference if you're bottom fishing in 100m of water.

Very few fish have been caught from Bubi when fishing a Westerly. But her biggest fish was caught in 15 knots of breeze straight out of Alice Springs, so go figure???

I don't like Westerlies though. No wind, no current. That's my favourite.

Yeah the calm clear water makes it tuff, the best days for boating seem to be the worst for fishing in the bay... he he

+ there is 1000s of boats out all the well known spots

I stick to the night/dawn/dusk sessions if possible when its really calm with a light W'ly
