Trouble is, now that they have issued a recall, albeit in another country, it proves they are aware of the problem, and if anything does happen here, BEFORE they've issued a recall here, they can be held liable, not only on a civil level, but criminal as well. It will be very unlikely though that engines among the listed serial number grouping would have been sold in more than one country.

Laws and litigation a lot diferent in the USA so in different countries they will handel it differently. On cars there has been different recalls in USA to Canada and deaths have been involved. The manufacturer ( any manufacturer) will do as much as is required to make it safe but countries laws will determin if they do it quietly at next service or do it via a mail out to current owners and home / shop visits or the like.

I have seen other equipment recalled i the USA and here they have just done a mail out saying to check before every outing or if concerned to take to agent. Pretty stupid as most people really don't have the skill to asses or check mechanical things but the company weight up it's risk.

The benefit or the newer brands with computers is that they can at least track where each motor is in the world and who is servicing them and prioritise different areas.

Is anyone actually aware of any catching fire?

I used to find reading recalls and bans in the back of choice amusing...and the variability of reasons above all.

The less better known for quality manucfactures were always things like brakes would fail, steering parts would fall off, fuel system may explode or something equaly dastardly that had consequences of certain death or injury

the better quality manufacturers would be issuing a recall for far less "significant" reasons.........paint finish may discolour, door handles may not be acceptbly durable, ash tray may not seal correctly allowing smoke to enter the cabin or such. .

some manufactures just take their product more seriously.

    and

Religeously devout, violently combusting, dual cycle engines, flying echolocating mammal person ....in deed

    cheers

A lot are just design or construction faults that could cause damage to a person.
Most things are just put in servi=ce updates the dealers get.
Doesn't tell you if the motor is a dog to start with and has nothing to do with overall reliability in the long term of properly maintained motors , boats and trailers.
