Single or Double Overbind?
I have been building my PE4 OH jigging rod and am now at the point where I have all the guides on. My question now is whether I should double overbind all of the guides or leave them as single overbound. I imagine there might be issues with the epoxy getting good penetration with the double overbinding, but the double might keep the guides much more stable on such a thin blank. I am unable to do the epoxy myself so I am at the mercy of the bloke from the tackle shop. Is there anyone out there that is on the northside of Brisbane that does the epoxy work professionally (I’m more than happy to pay for quality work)?
Any feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Simon

Re: Single or Double Overbind?
Hi Simon,
If I may ask, why can't you do the epoxy? You've gone to all the effort to build the rod, you should have a crack at finishing it. Out of the 4 rods I have made I've only really stuffed the epoxy once. It's the best way to learn and improve.
For your other question, I have no idea! I have double overbound one of my rods just to see if it makes a difference, it worked OK but the other rods with only one overbind work OK to. Maybe double overbind if it is a heavy line class but there are a lot more experienced people here that can give a better answer.

Re: Single or Double Overbind?
It would depend on the style of guides you have used, Tri foot guides prefer double over binds, double foot up to 50lb only require single over bind, over 50lb is worthwhile for double over bind.

Re: Single or Double Overbind?
I'd go double overbind with 'A' gauge thread.
Cheers.

Re: Single or Double Overbind?
I reckon the epoxy bit is probably the easiest part of the whole job, OH and double overbind for me (A thread)

Re: Single or Double Overbind?
not familiar with that blank. general rule is single overbind for light tackle, double overbind for heavy tackle. but only use A grade thread for double overbinds. On 37kg plus I use triple overbind in A grade.
The epoxy process can be quite simple, but time consuming. if you are going to double overbind, put a thin coating of epoxy on the first bind. Then a thin coating on the second bind. Then put a third ..what I call a finish coat...over that. If you underbind...I also put a very thin coat of epoxy on that as well. Sounds complex.....but that is the difference between a true custom rod and a rack rod. The epoxy process is more difficult if you are using high build epoxy's and trying to get a smooth finish, than if your are using low build, the surface area is less prone to bubbling and the drying (rotation) time is far less.
