Great catch!
Snuck out for a quick trip monday night during a brief break in the weather, with smooth waters we had some good fishing chasing reds out off the reefs in some deep shoaly country.
As always the sharks where in healthy numbers, got to be expected but.
It was also really amazing to see so many whales, we estimated atleast 15 all heading north, we even had one friendly guy scare the the crap out of us when it surfaced 10m behind the boat at about 2am in the morning while we where fishing, not sure if it was was coincidence but the fish happen to go off the bite at this time as well.
We went and moved in closer to the reef to have a look for some trout in the morning, but they where few and far between, the wind also had a bit of westerly in it at this stage, and for anyone who has fished with or knows someone from the Burdekin i think it is a common law, but the philosophise will tell you the fish dont bite when there is a W in the weather.
We decided to head back out to the deeper shoaly ground again in search for some new bottom, we struck it good again and picked up some nice emperor at about 9am,
After a quick clean down and fresh roadie for the trip home, it was back to ocean creek.
Great catch, these are the type I would like to get one day also but not in the south.
Good catch, did you end up with your limit on the reds?
Where abouts did you head out from?
Off townsville, we have noticed the trout a bit scarce of late also.
Cheers
Josh
nah mate ended up with about 25 fish mainly emperor and red jew they are good fish that take up esky space quick, not uncommon to bag out on red jew around the area we where in,
Headed out from ocean creek down in Ayr,
Mixed opinions on the trout, we done a trip out a couple of months back and pulled our bag limit of 28 good trout off one bommie in 40 minutes, never seen nothing like it
Nice bag of fish guys......... And that is a stonker of a chinaman

There is a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot
I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be without sponges
Up here we Use Hussar as baits for real RED FISHS (SHSIIFDER)
TROUT DONT LIKE WESTERLY'S
years back when I was reef fishing for a living out of Mackay , a westerly meant NO trout but as soon as the next wind change was coming they went back on the bite big time and they would go nuts and as you got 28 fish in 40 minutes will tell you how good they go off when the time is right.
when I was working the reef edges at those times you could get the trout going that good that they would come right to the surface like tailor , was awsome fishing.

Fished Trunk last week in a westerly and got a few trout. The winds calmed, the trout disappeared and on came the red throats. Spaniards and cobia all day.
Palm Islands are hopeless for fish in westerlies.
Fished Cairns a couple weeks back and we bagged out on trout in a morning session, three people on board with North westerly blowing.
