    what would u choose? 60 etc or 60 4stroke?

    Hey all
Im looking at maybe upgrading to better motor than my noisy 2 stroke 40hp. Looking at a 2006 evinrude etc 60hp and a yamaha 60hp 4 stroke also 2006. Both are within $500 of each other so im scratching my head a bit.... Im leaning towards the etec but would love to hear what you all think? Cheers!

Depends on what you want to use it for & on.

If slow trolling is ya thing, then personally, I think its hard to go past the 4 stroke. They are so much smoother for this style of thing. However the trade off is the weight and supposed high maintenance costs. So you'll need to consider this when deciding if its suitable for your current hull

If there is little or none of the above my preference would be for the Etec, but again the weight of this maybe higher than the 40 you already have so be wary of this in regard to insurance etc.

The 60 Yammy is a great engine! It's been a leader in that bracket for a very long time. A simple easy engine to maintain with no hidden issues.

I am not a fan of the Etec, if you want to know why search my username and etec and you will find the reasons why.

you can also do a search of international boating forums and find some cons for the 60 etec. I chose a 4 stroke over etec after my research.

Just compare the two and your decision will be made for you, the 60 hp e-tec is a 2 cylinder 863cc engine and weighs 109 kg , the Yami 60hp 4 stroke is a 4 cylinder 996 cc engine and weighs 110 kg.

In this range it's no competition at all, the four has got it all over the e-tec. Now if you were looking at the next size up say in the 75 to 90 range the e-tec would be worth considering!

    Ps

I still struggle with the fact that the 60 e-tec is a 2 cylinder engine, i guess it was weight/cost thing but i would jump straight over this engine to the 75hp e-tec ( if i was solely commited to the brand)if the boat could handle it although it's nearly another 30 kg extra! Your current motor is probably around the 80 kg mark so going to the 60 you already adding aroung 30 kg!

It's interesting how people assume that the 2 stroke will be much lighter than the four, brp's advertising has paid off i assume? The yami 4 stroke is actually a massive 1 kg heavier than the e-tec in this HP and considering you get twice the cylinders that's pretty good imho!

    G'day,

Put the new Suzuki 4-stroke 60HP to 90HP range into the equation as well. All the same basic engine and similar weights - which isn't much weight at all.

Would go the Yamaha every time in this size as already stated has been the class leader for years with commercial operators having huge hours on these motors without a problem. I have been doing a lot of research on this size motor as I will be purchasing a 60 soon and I have decided on the new Honda BFA60. I have had a 150 etech, 225 honda, 150 yamaha 4-stroke and 150 Yamaga HPDI and many old tech 2 strokes in the days before 4-strokes and by far my personal favorite has been the Honda but the weight in the smaller motors has been a problem for me. Now they have a 110kg 60hp with efi and nmea 2000 Im all over it.

    cheers guys!
To shed more light on my boat and use....
I have a 4.40 makocraft tournament, its rated to 60hp. I have seen other 4.40s the same as mine with 60 four strokes so i know it handles the weight and power. Im looking for quiet and friendly on fuel and a bit of balls.
Use will be general dam use for barra bass etc, i dont troll very much but on days when i have cast myself to death its a nice break.
Also will be used to get to inshore reefs, do some pelagic trolling and a small amount of estuary stuff.
Both dealers claimed equal fuel consumption, both claimed there brand was the choice..... Both claimed they were quiet and reliable. The etec doesnt require a service for 3 years where the four stroke does every year at a few hundred or more dollars a pop. Also im told the etec has more balls?
    Cheers all!

Thumbs up Re: what would u choose? 60 etc or 60 4stroke?

I have a quinnie 455 topender with a yam 60hp 4st, love it. has run fantastic, no issues. loaded with 3 guys & gear and gets on the level quick. just had a service and all good. have not had an etec, just happy my yammie.

Re: what would u choose? 60 etc or 60 4stroke?

Appart from the fact I use a Yammie F60C and find it an exceptionally smooth and reliable motor, Finding_time has hit the comparison nail on the head. The Yammie will be much smoother and more torquey, and at the same weight is a no brainer front runner. This motor also has the runs on the board both commercially and recreationally.

    Cheers

Ye I love my F 60's they are hard to fault. You would not be dissapointed with the Yammy. Remember you need 2 stroke oil for the Etec and its not cheap so the whole no service thing works out about even I say for $$$. Like the others say the comparison with 2,4 cylinders etc makes it an easy choice. 2 cyl 60 thats hard to imagine, gee they must be working hard those whole 2 cylinders!!!

does anyone value there life & limb so little that they would go to sea with an engine that hasn't been serviced for three years?? sometimes I really wonder what people are thinking.
Hard to go past the 60 yammie in this class. the new zuke should be intresting donk once it has some runs on the board.
