    Does your Voltage display work..?

Just bought a 5380 and got it home from Vic to Qld and ran thru the setup...Voltage display (very handy) shows 0.3V...when connected to a battery at 13.1V ...huh..? Rang Navico/Northstar/Navman customer support...

(them) "Oh the 500/5000 series doesnt have the voltage sensing hardware in the unit..!".........
(me)...but the user manual and the software decribe it in detail and tell you how to set it up...?
" oh..that shouldnt be there..." there is no voltage sensor installed in that range of units.....if the retailer told you it was then take it back (to Melb..??)
(me) yeah right thanks a lot...

The unit suits me and I can install a little 0-15V dash voltmeter no probs. (already grabbed one from Dicks for $17) .. but what an amateur outfit.

So next time you research a product and read a Navico/Northstar/Navman User Manual thinking you are researching what that model does and doesnt do... think again...the guy admitted that the manuals are "cut and paste in sections all over the place and this happens"........bet the family jewels it doesnt at Furuno mate..!

Voltage readout has never worked in mine. If they don't have a voltage sensor, it seems odd that the unit has options in the menu for voltage display & alarms.
Anyway the voltage readout part doesn't bother me.
It's not the greatest unit in the world, but for the money, it's pretty good. It's only a small unit, but I was limited for mounting space. Add a C-Map card and it makes life a lot easier.
I've found it does everything that I wanted it to do, and is easy to operate. I also use the fuel computer function in mine (very handy).
I haven't had to deal with Northstar for any warranty, and "touch wood" hope I wont have to either. It's the first GPS/plotter I've ever had, so I didn't want to buy anything too sophisticated or pricey.
    Cheers,
    Leigh (Kero).

Agree Kero.. I want to use the fuel system also and the GPS part is fine...but the voltage reading doesnt happen. The guy on their 1 300 help line was very helpful... just the answer was crap. Agree it has lot of capability for the price.
