    Installing Sand spike

hello all im thinking about putting asand spike on my 12' surf rod. to put it on i was thinking of maybe - 1' 6" long which means 1' from bottom of blank and 6" on blank.

cutting 6" off of the grip off the blank drilling a hole in the spike and gluing the spike on.

i have a wood lathe so i can turn one up myself. are there any other ways of doing this. any help would be appreciated...

I have found timber sand spikes inevitably get water in them and the swell and split the butt of your rods. Best option is an alloy one or a poly one. Fitted the same way......turned down to snugly fit inside the blank and araldited into place.

To be honest though, these days I much prefer a decent rod holder and a standard butt on the rod. Good snad rodholders are a lot easier to get into the sand and do not work loose like a rod sand spike can.

yeah a piece of pvc pipe would probably be better for a rod holder as i dont go surf fishing much.

Hey Jack, have you seen the set-ups the Poms/Yanks use?
Just about need a fourby to get the trolley onto the beach!
Would be very comfortable to use though, guess they don't get as many greenback bites in the UK as we do!
Cheers, and BB, nothing wrong with a long piece of PVC anchored firmly into the sand at the appropriate angle. i'm thinking a circle hook would be the way to go, unless you were instantly able to grab the rod and prepare to strike......
    Cheers.

We use to use a star pickets.
With PVC rod holder bolts on easy.
Useing 2 PVC 50mm cuts with pices cut one bolted to the picket.
The other fits over makeing for a good locking device.
You can hang a light/ radio of it etc
Throw it over your sholder with a buckets on eather end.
Note take a coat hanger or tire wire.
