Chasing tailor on North Straddie - anyone with a 4WD

To the land based angler with a 4WD.

G'day, I hear there are greenback tailor on North Straddie Eastern side heading towards the Pin.

Is there anyone chasing them and can offer on outing. As I don't have a 4WD as yet, I can split the fuel and barge costs from mainland Cleveland.

    Cheers, Peter

Bondy - have you tried driving up to Bribie or down to Narrowneck to chase them? You don't need a fourby !!

    G'day gunna,

Mate been to Narrowneck on too many occassions and Bribie on a couple of occassions. At least on a remote beach you can have a good look and search instead of driving on a road, walk and suss a beach then drive on the bitumen a few miles to repeat the process...cant drive a 4WD on any Gold Coast beaches unless one is Ranger, Cop, Lifesaver, Fisheries Patrol or Commerical netter.

Mate as mentioned you don't necessarily need a 4wd to get em. I've read a few of your posts and it seems you have the time available so maybe instead of doing a 1 day trip with a long drive, make a few days of it and stay somewhere? 2 options would be:

Wilderness camp ground Noosa North Shore. Camp right in front of the beach and walk out. Plenty of gutters and if you feel like walking, plenty more options up or down. I haven't fished that particular stretch there for years but people are always pulling fish from the general area (conditions permitting of course)

South Beach caravan park Ballina. Again, camp right on the beach and walk out. I regularly stay in this park and on occassion just walk to the beach to fish when it's not drivable due to high tide.

Both these beaches are reasonably remote considering you have 2wd access only. Plan a mid-week trip outside of school or public holidays around some good weather and you're in business. You'll have toilet and shower facilities at both and hard standing accom if you don't want to tent it.

Also often get them in the gutters out the front of the causeway beach track on Straddie. You can drive over and just walk onto the beach...not the same I know...

Add the beach north of the Maroochy mouth. Drive and walk.

For all those who made suggestions about 4WD versus walk and plenty of time on my hands....(which I take on board) I do have other committments and have limitations apart from fishing like everyone else has.

5 metre swells are not ideal to be fishing from the beach.

Sounds good. Are both surf and estuary sides good fishing.

Where does the water taxi leave from?

    Thanks for your help.

Obviously I am talking about when the swell drops back, any fool with an ounce of common sense knows that, guess suggestions are a waste of time(stick to the pumping jetty)

Eleanor, if you google Currigee, you will come to a site that features the camping available at South Straddie( South Currigee, North Currigee, Tipplers and the Bedrooms), all areas have facilities and I believe cabin accomadation is available at some areas. There is a link that you can contact them to find out costs and availability of water taxi transfers etc. South Straddie is a top spot(uncrowded ) with top fishing for most of the common beach species primarily off the beach on the ocean side of the island, weather permitting, estuary species are available on the inside of the island but a lot of undersized bream etc can be expected to be encountered(ok if the kids are just learning to fish). It is a short walk to the beach from the camp grounds and well worth it.

    hooknose,

thanks for the info.. I googled some info

just to confirm no cars are allowed on the island? I live near departure point at runaway bay so thats good and I see transport to Currigee is cheaper than the northen end of the island.

I am new to camping. Assuming I stay in a 2 person hut with my wife and 2 yr old..what do I need to take so that the trip is more 'glamping' than 'rough smelly' camping

I see showers and barbques are available but I am really new to this

    G'day Fishel ad apconcen,

South Straddie is all sand, the only vehicles allowed are official government 4WD vehicles. I purchased a so-called 4 person tent on a trip to Goomburra Forest Reserve, and it was crap, only fitted one person unless the tent was designed for midgets or dwarfs. Choose tents wisely and have staff set it up so you can explore it whilst in the shop.

apconcen, I havent tried the huts mate so not sure what comforts are included, I usually shoot across in my tinny(only takes 2-3 minutes) thats why it is cheap, it is a fair run up to the bedrooms thats why it is dearer. I usually crash on the beach for an hour or two if I am fishing all night (which I plan to do soon) and take a couple of salad rolls and a thermos of coffee or a couple of bundy bears, in the past its just me, my fishin buddy and the wildlife(kangaroos, oyster catchers, kurloo's) over there in the middle of the night and it is magic(usually get a good feed and best chance around to snag a big Tailor).
