Small Sharks can you take them legally

    Hi All
Moved to Cairns 8 months ago been fishing at holloways beach near home a few times usually catch a couple of small hammer head or shovel nose sharks some people have said they are good eating but i thought they were protected or is it only certain species . If not whats legal and do you have to skin them and how do you cook them . I've had flake on the BBQ before very nice .

    hey sheridan,
Holloways Beach is in qld near cairns right ??
as of 1st of this month ...sharks and rays can be kept up to 1.5 meters...with a bag limit of 1....yeah 1, sux eh....
the exceptions are the NO TAKE species... great white sharks, grey nurse sharks, speartooth sharks and sawfish....

not sure how they measure the rays but would hazard a guess at tip of snout to tip of tail....and not across the flaps....

not sure if the bag limit is per species or combined....

but in anycase if its over 1.5 meters (5 foot) ya gotta let it go...

    hope this makes sense
    cheers chris

The measurement for the sharks near the max size of 1.5m is less than 60cm from the notch at the back of the first dorsal fin to the notch at the back of the second dorsal, which is a lot safer than going near that mouth when they get near that size.

Great eating, good luck removing the skin. Keep you sharpening stone next to the filleting knife.

yeah...cut a bit of flesh away with it... and cut all skin from inside...
shovelnose are rays....dunno if id eat one....
i cut up a 4 footer earlier this year.... a heap of meat but its still in the freezer.....need to clean the barbie and thats work...lol

if you leave skin on and slightly cook the skin side it scrapes off real easy... but i only did that when cooking it for the dog.....and she died....
she was 17 years old but

    hammerhead should be nice..

Any shark under 3ft is ideal, less mercury accumulation. Bull sharks, Bronze whaler, reef sharks, blue shark are the best. I have had shovelnose too, not too bad.

the tastiest of the sharks you are likely to get up north is the mako, blues a close second. Best eating of all the sharks are gummies and angel fish...but they are a colder water fish. Ideally sharks around the 1 - 1.2 metre mark are the best eating. I think its a really sensible limit they have put on (the 1.5m that is), though i think the bag of one is a bit harsh...two or three would have been more reasonable. Definitely trunk the sharks when ya get em, bleeds a lot of the ammonia taste out of em. I use a diver style knife to cut through the skin, with a 'steel' close by to hone the edge. Dont let your good filleting knife anywhere near the skin. Make the intitial cut with the heavy knife then use the filleting knife to finish the job. cut the fillets thin (about 1cm)........do em on the bbq, or in a nice beer batter (not really suitable for a light tempura type batter) as they require a bit longer cooking than normal fish (not much though).

Makos are by far the best eating, new laws that just came in outlaw taking sharks over 1.5 metres in length
