Mixed bag in the North-West 4/7/09

Left the ramp Sunday approx 0630, getting to our first spot, The Lady Joyce at 0730 just as the sun came up.

With good showings of bait around we anchored up and began our days fishing. Down went the bait jig producing multiple scad on each drop before even reaching the bottom. While I was cleaning up on livies, Dave hooked in to the first good fish of the day, being a nice mullaway.

The bait soon moved off the spot and so did we, anchoring again when we found them. Was fishing a soft plastic with 20lb leader when it got slammed big time! 10 min later up came this big fat cod coming in just under a meter. We tried swimming it but the fight on 20lb braid was too much for it to overcome so in the esky it went.

An hour or so had passed since we first arrived with only the mulla, the cod, a few legal snapper and not much action we made the decision to troll for a bit then head out to our offshore islands. Arriving an hour later the action was slow at first but still producing a couple of nice snapper, an unstoppable and another cod.

At this point it was around midday and with quite a few boats fishing the same ground we decided to troll around for a bit in a nice little bay where we noticed bait being harassed by small tuna. In came the trolling gear and out came the spinning gear. Using a 20g twisty I fired a couple of casts over the school, with each retrieve being followed up by at least 10 fish! A few were dropped before one was boated.

We were coming up on another school when a mackie of around 15kg sky rocketed at least 8ft, right through the middle!

Anyway we continued chasing the schools casting at their outskirts. The little 20g metal was getting absolutely hammered! The next fish was a nice little broad-barred just over a meter long being tailed under the boat by a massive cod! The next cast also produced with a speedy little sharkie, again just over a meter. Was all great fun on the little Luvias 3000 and 20lb braid.

We then left the schools being smashed sounding around huge bommies and drop-offs with not much result although Steve boated the best mack of the trip on the little setup, an estimated 8kg broad-barred.

The next hour or so was spent bottom bouncing and popping various lumps for little result so we headed home, encountering a couple of whales on the way.

Half way home the wind came in so we timed it pretty well I think. Great day with a mixed bag for the table. Can’t wait to do it again.

    Enjoy!

    Cheers

There is a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot

I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be without sponges

Up here we Use Hussar as baits for real RED FISHS (SHSIIFDER)

What a great looking place. A few different species there compared to the same old QLD fish.

    Great shots.

Not a bad effort for a day trip. I would say you ticked all the boxes a fishing trip can have.

    Cheers

How do you get the photos to be in the post like that?

    Cheers for the comments guys.

Anyone know what type of tuna that is? I have no idea.

Also, what does everyone reckon about the size of the images? Too big? Too small?

Chris, Nick's right, but before I upload the images to photobucket I resize them through Irfanview to 740 x 493 for horizontal and 493 x 740 for vertical shots.

    Cheers and thanks.
