I have only chased muddies up here can be very frustrating 5 or 6 crabs in pot males usally undersize 1 or 2 females right size but cant keep and nippers a lot smaller anyway , can you keep female sand crabs and what size do they have to be.
went out this morning on my own and got over 3 dozen sand crabs, used 3 dillies and 1 pot............
now for the catch, pardon the pun
there were 5 legal male, the rest were females, the surprising feature was that only two of these had eggs, maybe breeding season is over....
cheers

no you cannot keep jennies/females any size, i kept the 5 bucks, i was just saying in the post i caught over 30 females, sorry if it misled you into thinking i took the females

G'day Robsue, since you had no one out with you, you could have called me to come out, I could have done with a feed of sandies.
Peter
G'day Ped,
In Qld you cant even be in posession of a jenny neverlone take one. However, DPI has approved certain crab farms to operate and grow crabs to sell to people both male and female crabs but it will take some legal sorting out with dockets, receipts etc.
However in NSW you are allowed to take jennies as long as they are not berried (carrying eggs)...same goes for sand crabs (Blue Swimmers).
Peter
g'day
still gettin a few crabs robsue...pitty about all the females you got though..but 5 is a nice feed for lunch..going to give the sandhills a go on sunday if the winds not blowing too much...have herd there still gettin them over there and the whiting are there as well...
cheers rosco
thats where i want to be as well on weekend rosco.
i remember reading on here last week that someone got a good feed of sandies at the sandhills.
greg
yeah i got 15 or so out of the pots at the sandhills last weekend though no whitting around plenty of grinners though also managed a few schoolies which should start coming on soon
Greetings Seahorse and rosco1974,
I'm after a feed of sandies and will also like to try for whiting and anything else that comes our way. I have 2 dillies and 2 pots I like to try out.
If you have room for another send me a pm.
Thanks, Peter
g'day justjack
think they are a bit hit miss there at the moment....but a mate went on the last week and got 75 with 3 on board his boat and a 20 odd sandies there as well...said it was hard to find the school but once he did got them every drop.
cheers rosco
p.s greg he said he got the crabs in about 9 mtrs
yeah there like that there once you find a general area its usually good, ide say float a live whitting out while your there aswell as i said the macs came threw a few times and i did see one big cobia aswell
Rosco
originally i went to northeast side of mud island ,and it was blowing there so headed back to green, in the past few crab trips females were scarce luckily....
going by seabreeze weekend will be blowing, monday very good, but as we all know this can change between now and then, if monday is good i might give the sandhills a go, i read the report from there about crabs/whiting
thanks rosco
If you are getting lots of females, you are too high on the bank. find the lee side of the bank, and put your pot / dilly at the lower side of a drop off on the lee side.
then you'll find the bucks.............
trueblue
i went to the same spot i have for the last 6 or so trips, and generally have only got about 2-3 females, with around 20 legal males, i just put it down to end of seaon, or rosco has caught too many,lol.....
but your theory is worth a thought......
cheers
Robsue
