Yamaha CV 25 v's Yamaha 25 2-Stroke

Hi all,

I havent been on for yonks so i thought this would be a great opportunity to ask for your advice on the yamaha 2-strokes. I have come across a Yamaha 25hp CV 2-Stroke outboard to put on my tinny, but, as this is the "Customer Version" or something. Am i losing much, eg, power, longevity etc. Any info would be great.

Are they a good motor?
Am i losing much power?
Does anyone have one who can offer an opinion.

We have a 4m Sea Jay with a Yammie 25hp Cv bought new in 1995. I reckon it has over 500 hours on it and still is in excellent order, starts easily and push's the boat to 40km/h with 2 up. The Cv is the single carb version I think. Only ever issue was the spindle/shaft for the steering at the transom got a bit stiff (apparently a rubber sleeve there that perishes)

I would buy another tomorrow

Mate I am not overly familiar with the 25's but know that the difference in the 30's in terms of enjoying your bating is huge. The horse power is still 30 so you loose nothing there. They are both 3 pots but the standard has 3 carbies against the one on the CV, this results in a better fuel economy ( although in these HP ranges economy is great so differences are small) but most significantly it is a much much smother engine running a 100:1 oil ratio. I would assume that the 25 which is a 2 pot from memory will exhibit similar differences. As far as the 30 goes, if the boat and your pocket can wear it I highly recommend the 30 hi tech.

Check the positioning of the gear shifter. From memory the Cv has it on the side of the motor and the 'normal' 25 has it at the front. It will be much more user friendly with a front gear shift.

As Bowser said, if you can afford the 30 'HiTech', buy that.

Pretty sure the CV 30 is still a 2 cyl, same block as the 25 both with a single carb.

The next step up 25 has 2 carbs and is a 2 cyl.

The 3 cyl 30HP has 3 carbs.

I think cv stands for clunker version as they are very harsh at idle worth going for the hi tech 30 if you can afford it give Wayne a ring at stones he will do a top deal for you.

Well, two problems there. My tinny is only rated to 25 and when i say ive come across a motor i mean im getting it for free. so buying wont be an option im afraid.

As im a younger fella noise and things isnt really a problem for me. I just need a leccy to fix that

So the main question i ask is power. Will i lose any power from the normal yammy 25 to the CV.

Or is it more just the concept of noise, ergonomics, and fuel economy?

CV is for "customer value" it is the same motor but without anything that is not really needed, on the bigger motors they were not oil injected, they are mix your own (even the V4) no stainless prop, almost anything that could be done to keep the price down, so you will still have 25HP and it will probably be no noisier than any other carby 25, so go for it with confidence.
