the figures for the 350 from yamaha on my vessel have the 300 chewing more than there 350 .which is why i am not surprised a 400 is in the pipline . the 300 develops 300 hp with over a 1000 revs to go . i would expect the yammy is far more powerfull motor but is way over cubed for a 300 and weight wise you have to draw the line somewhere.at 42000 + you would be wondering what else comes with it

I want to see how long the gearbox and trim units last on all these big boys as they have the ability to push boats fast and heavy so there is a lot of stress.

the durability of the box is going to make a big difference in the total cost of ownership.

Diesel turbo outboard motor at 250hp with closed cooling will be avaliable next year so will be interested on pricing. Will weigh same as 300hp and with development happening 300-350 is possibly but service life may be reduced at higher hp.

Will be very interested in reviews next year as the fuel figures are stunning which means a big range. Hopefully a alternative

Wonder if they will run a big etec on diesel to compete

don't wish to doubt the fuel use at all, but I find it hard to believe than a 225HP Opti will use 100 litres more than a 300HP anything, 30% more! I don't own either Motor (or for that fact any of the ones mentioned) but it seems a bit too one sided to be acurate enough for me.

if its out of its cruise range and most likely pitched down at 17 or below l while the zuk is swinging 18.5 . remember the fuel use of the opti is very much the same as the etec. rpm are pretty much the same except the etec 3.2and the opti 3 l are sucking each stroke while the 4 litre is every second not much science required there . but the zuk running wot revs a lot higher than the others and is over 20 ltrs a hour thirsty than the etec.

the extra cubes approx 1 lt give s far more available torque plus gearing down increases torque far more so its very feasible to have that much more fuel economy as long as one stays in that economical spot. lets face it most boats of this horsepower don't run flat out but are looking for economy except those glorified bass canoes . simple fact high hp motors with low cubes are always in twins or pictured on lightweight boats wonder why .

if you look up on the yamaha web site with the 350 yammy on the 680 patriot there cruise is 1.4 klm/lt which is probably better than there 250 though either side of that is a bit thirstier , most likely to much cubes though it would be some weapon. before everyone jumps up and down the duel back is required on the patriot to enable the weight as well as the extra hp compliance.

i believe a lot of boat manufactures who tend to rate there hull around 250 hp mark will move up to the 300 mark as there is definite fuel savings to be had over most brands of 250 hp which brings back the question are 250 s overrated 200 s . eg another example is the 300 etec they advertise can be up to 30% better on fuel than the 250 . simple fact changes are coming through , yammy went big cubes to skip the reduction like the zuk , zuk designed the right cube motor for a 300 , merc pumped them up with a compressor but all are giving better fuel economy that the present day modern 250 hp and all i can say its a good thing

We have a 300 Zuke on a 8.0m Fisher. The fuel ecconomy and performance is excellent. Our previous boat was a 6.1m Barcrusher with a 150HP honda and fishing at Bermagui where we typically cruise out to the shelf sitting on 20Knts and then troll for 8-10 hrs at 7 knts, before crusing back in we would consume 120-130l per day.

On our last trip in the Fisher +300 Zuke we would cruise out and in at 26-28 knts, and troll around for 8-10 hrs at knts and consumed 130-140 L/day day. Pretty amazing considering boat is twice the size of the BC with twice the horespower.

We had one day where we went through 155L. Got into a bit of a drag race back into port with Haines Hunter 650 Classic with a 225 Honda on the back. Had her flat out in a 2-3ft chop doing 35-36 knt for about 15 mins. She consumes 90l/hr when flat out (as apposed to 45l/hr for 26knts). On flat water she'll do 39 knts.

The exrtra fuel burns was worth it to see the ammazment on the faces of Haines Hunter boys back at the ramp after they finally got in. First time theyd ever been show a clean pair of heels by a tinny. I think they had more flat water speed than us but were hanging on with both hands and getting pounded and lost heart when we went passed holding on with one hand and toasting them by drinking a stubbie of beer with the other.

    Cheers
    Horto
