Mate has a Honda 90 1999 model. When out fishing the motor performs well for 3-5 hrs but then an alarm sounds and the motor goes into limp mode. It cuts a cylinder to protect the motor and can take up to 40 minutes before motoring can begin again. More times than not it re-over heats within ten minutes.
Any ideas as the mechanics are scrathing there heads and at $90.00 ph it's a worry.
Im no $90p/h mechanic, but if the cooling system is working properly, could it be some kind of malfunction in the temperature sensor or whatever controls the shutdown of the cylinder and starts LIMP mode?Originally Posted by ped cairns

That is the exact problem that I had with my Honda 4 stroke. I spent $900 on it to get it fixed , first trip out it cracked the head.
I was also in Cairns mate and the local Honda dealer is very very dear.

I gave up trying to fix it and sold it as is.

Don't know whether this is of any help. I had a 200Hp Mariner that did that. It turned out to be a faulty thermastat and it kept setting the horn off.

Ha ha ha . No mate it was not a 90 HP. Just goes to show that at least Honda is consistant with their problems lol.
It was the worst outboard that I have ever owned. It used approx 25% more fuel on the same boat then my mates Yammy.
From what I have been told though Hondas are normally top notch throughout the entire range. The new Honda 4's look the goods. If only they were not so dear for what they are?

Has the limp mode sensor been taken out and cleaned up a bit for maybe crud and scale build up.
Or has it been at least replaced.

Thanks for your responses. Will look at the limp mode sensor and get cleaned. The thermast and sensor have been replaced. Will let you know if we find the solution.

I hope for your mates sake that it's not related to a cracked head and something smaller like a sensor. The prob is the cost involved with investigating these matters and I know honda spare parts are quite expensive on all products they produce. Interesting if this was an e-tec there would be 500 pages of mondays experts giving their opinion.
