i would pay that extra ....i have had a two speed for over 15 years an still going strong.....and gets used and miss treated all the time
Would like to try one of these cheaper style overhead reels. The Shimano two speeds are obvious choice but price is way out there, so I thought it may be worth trying one of the cheaper versions on the market. I realise you get what you pay for but surely some of them can't be all that bad, has anyone tried any of them.

Yea a few mates have the "reely" nice ones, I just thought someone should jump in and try one of these Korean or Thai versions just to see what they are like and thought someone might have already had a go at them. They make some pretty amazing promises of course so you just wonder how bad they could be.
Are you specifically after a 2 speed reel? If not you cannot go past a TLD for a good value overhead. They are light, strong and basically bulletproof. I would not go near a very cheap noname two speed reel

the TLD is made in Malaysia now and not as good a quality IMO than the older Japan made TLD's but still a very good quality reel giving excellent value for money

I'd be carefull what brands you buy to start with... i had a couple cheapo's the known brands lasted slightly longer than the others but my worst was a $70 one... didn't look too bad but didn't even last 6 months... invested in a TLD and haven't had a problem with it since and that was nearly 5yrs ago... and we put it through some tough times with the drag set at about 15-20kg...
Cheers, Nidrac..
there is quite a difference between "cheap" and "inexpensive"
I purchased a "PLD 25 2 speed" off the net - from that e-B*y site - paid about $50 for it including delivery... Used it about 8 times now in 32 to 50 fathoms and pulled in some great fish on it - so far so good. Do a search for "PLD reels" and you will find the ones - if you need any more specific help - just PM me...
Brad.
Have a look at the cheaper Penn overheads super gt level wind @ $155.00,not 2 speed but cheap and as tough as nails.Hint Dont buy off the bay with an e unless you know exactly what your buying as there are a number of cheap overheads on there but quality is dubious.
