    Where do I start

    Hi All
Need some advice on where i need to start with building my own rod.
What do I need firstly-- not just materials but other equipment as well.
What sort of rod is best to start off with??

Your advice and guidance would be much appreciated.

any blank that suits your style of fishing guides to suit and reel seat and grips, then you need masking tape
    aladite[ or something similar]
    metho/ shellite etc
    knife blades
    threads[ your colour choice]
    epoxy
    colour preserver
and this is just a start, if you do a search roz posted a great list of stuff for us to bring to the rbw,s
    welcome rod building
    its addictive

    Re: Where do I start

    Hi Ronnie,

I know nothing about building rods but I do know that the magazine 'Fishing World' has a section about rod building in it. From grips to tools used it covers.

    Thanks Tom

    Re: Where do I start

I'd start with a rebuild of an old rod you like.
Not much outlay for materials and will give an understanding of whats involved.
    It's a good pastime though
    Cheers then

PS must be time for another rodbuilding week-end.
I intend on living for-ever....so far so good

I agree. Maybe even start on a runner replacement on an old rod to practice on.

Then look out new rods everywhere.

You can see some tutorials on youtube. Type in rod building.

    Re: Where do I start

Mate, my advice is not to feel overawed by too much information. See if you can get hold of an old Rodcrafter magazine at a newsagents. That magazine is the best reference piece for anyone starting out. It has heaps of recipes and a blank chart which are a great help. The Fishing World magazine provides heaps of usefull information and recipes I and other builders have done. Don't rush. Take your time and view it as a project where you want to make the best rod "you" can for "your" purposes. Don't hesitate to ask questions. There are heaps of people out there willing to help and offer suggestions. Don't blame me or anyone else if you find it gets addictive! Go for it.

    Re: Where do I start

    hi ronnie,
there was a mag years ago, australian rod builder or something like that, should be heaps of info on the net.
i do my own rods every now and then, i have a very basic setup but it does the job, some of the rods i have rolled up for myself and family are over 10 years old and till going strong.
you don't need a heap of gear to get you started, best bit of kit i have is a little rotissery and roller wheels i got from mo tackle years ago, dunno if they still sell them
    cheers

    Hi
Best bet is to watch some DVD's, check out you tube and the net -- type in rod buliding and you get heaps.

Am currently concentrating on the equipment you need and when i have sorted that, will progress to some materials required and a small repair job to an existing rod first up.

Will let you know how I progress.

Rod building weekend sounds good as there seems to be a few people keen to get started making rods. You learn 10 times more face to face than over the internet when first starting.

    Hi Adam
Great idea. It is true you learn more from people who are doing it already but if others are like me it is finding the time to do do it.

    Re: Where do I start

While i was down at Brunswick heads, nsw, on holidays, if i was'nt in the boat fishing, sleeping or eating i was around at the local bait and tackle.
One day while i was around there picking his brains we got talking about rod building and he said that he had a range of videos that went thru the whole process from start to finish.
So over the next few days while it was pissin down, i spent in front of the tv watching these very informative vids.
if you can track these down they will help you no end.
they are prob the ones on youtube now.

    cheers
