Best Snapper bait at the Pin?

    G'day all

Heading down to the pin next week for a long awaited boys only houseboat trip.

This year I'm thinking of doing more fishing then drinking (only thinking about it) and I'm keen to target some Snapper.

It is not a fish I've targeted before and if anyone is willing to share there suggested baits, it will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

I think that you will doing very well indeed to catch snapper down the 'pin.

I would be looking for bream this time of year.

    Cheers

    Thanks Vit S.

Perhaps I should rephrase to "Squire" We always get a good catch of bream each year.

Squire/Snapper, does not really matter, you would still be doing well.

If I was to target them around that area I would be looking at rocks, maybe McCleay ( spelling )/Russell Islands, Seaway? Not really in the 'pin area.

But, who knows, someone on here may have a spot that they pull snapper out of, but, it may be difficult getting that spot

    Go the bream.

    Good luck all the same

    Cheers

Plenty of Sqire/Snapper have come from the Kalinga Bank area over the years but they are not a normal catch and would be difficult to target. Perhaps it would be better to set your sights on a Jew. Park your houseboat at the tip of Short or Tiger Mullet and soak some live Mullet while you sit back and relax with a few cleansing ales

Thanks for the advice gents, I'm taking the tinny with me, but doubt I'll be drunk enough to take it over the bar. If i do I won't remember anyway.

Not after anyones spot X, just if people had caught squire before down that way and if so on what? In the past we've got squire on squid (on & off as you say Horse)

    There will be beer drunk!

Got one not far from the ramp. Middle of the day 37cm. Was very suprised . Now know that there are more there. But I usually go down the pin to fish offf a beach. I get enough squire at the top end of Macleay.

I regularly catch a lot of undersize squire around the pin but nothing even close to legal size. Best squire I have caught down there was about 500m north of the cabbage tree boat ramp, but still undersize. Target is bream, whiting and maybe flatties on a drift.

Have caught catties, moses perch and a few rays in the estuaries around the area too.

I was lucky enough to score some legal squire early one morning off the end of crusoe island. From memory we got 1/2 dozen or so between 37 and 45cm. It was 10 or so years ago and we were chasing tailor at the time. We also got a small sweetlip and a parrot that same morning.

Cheers all, okay so the ones caught in previous years are flukes or Beefa brings one along from Wello each year for the weight in.

I have only ever caught one, and I think Muz has caught one. Thats it.

The bait we use are whole mangrove jack on a bait jig. Works a treat.

Can you tell I am on one of the other houseboats !!
