    Worms found in surf bream

Braved NSW's dodgy weather on Sunday to find myself the only fisherman onmy beloved Mungo Beach NSW. Rain, a strong noreaster and a very rough surf that was full of kelp and various churned up weed saw me doubling my sinker weight just to hold bottom. Bagged 9 bream in the conditions, 4 of which weighed one and a half kilos -- not gigantic but nice. But last night after barbequeing and eating served with the heads on we noticed long (about 100mm), thin, worm-like organisms in one of the heads. Of course after 30 minutes on the barby you couldn't tell if these were actually worms but they sure looked the real deal. I tried to tell my wife that they were the fish's brains and went into a rave that fish had very small brains -- even smaller that State-of-Origin video replay referees (couldn't resist) -- but she's not buying it. Anyone know about this?

If you've pulled the head off a cooked fish you may have pulled out a section of the spinal cord from along the top of the backbone. It would be white and about spaghetti thickness in fish of that size I would guess. There are two kinds of worms I commonly find in the flesh of bream fillets. One is a tightly clumped bunch of fine yellow worms and the other is a long black thread usually in the back section of the fillet or in the flesh around the gut cavity. You can see one of them in the attached photo. The black ones will pull out quite easily if you get the point of a sharp knife under them. The yellow ones require the whole piece of flesh to be cut out. Neither of them would hurt you if you ate them in cooked fish but it's the thought that counts (especially in the case of the ladies).

And further to your point, Hayne put his foot on the line.
    Nice catch anyhow

Yes, on further investigation, I believe the video match referees committee have reviewed the video a further 127 times in slow motion, super slow motion with both zoom and macro lenses and also digitally enhanced Disneymotion for any fantasy effects. Furthermore DNA samples of Hayne's boot have revealed that it was made from pigskin comprised from a relative of a rare pig found in Muslim Afghanistan, where pork and pig products are illegal because they are considered irreligious, and which has been in quarantine since the swine flu pandemic. The subsequent blade of grass that Bill Harrigan identified (prior to his apparent own major session of grass smoking) has been sent to the forensic criminology labaoratory in Risdon Prison in Tasmania for further testing. Until then the jury is out.

    I'm teasing

Nice catch. I personally love bream fishing in the surf. I'll pm a couple of pics I've got. (to avoid the "why did you do that" crew)

Next time we'll make the field a little wider for you blokes.

Yeah, the refs felt so bad about the foot on the line that they ignored the obvious forward pass into in-goal area and gave them a free try

Yeah, don't you love that rule Pretzil? You can throw a forward pass that Joe Montanna from the San Francisco 49ers would have been proud of and the video ref can't do anything about it but come within a whisker of white paint on a blade of grass and ol' Bill Harrigan goes anal.

Then what are you whingers going on about, you got one you shouldn't have and MAYBE lost benefit of doubt on the other. The two other tries were flukes
