    Re: diesel mercruiser

They are a good engine although all the newer lightweight diesels are exactly that, lightweight. Diesels are generally much heavier than petrol engines to withstand the combustion shock of compression ignition.

I read a report somewhere (but I don't remember where now) that mentioned these lightweight diesels had a design life of around 500hrs prior to a rebuild. I was somewhat shocked by that but it would stand to reason if they are such a lightweight package and for many boaters that could be 5+yrs down the track from new. What really will kill these engines far more quickly is high revs. Diesels of any description don't like to rev so when you make them lighter and make them rev harder they will spit the dummy faster.

Having said that, as long as it has good oil pressure and runs well then it should be good for some time yet particularly if you will be running it fairly lazy.

    cheers

Thanks BM and Dave- I will take photo,s and post.
Your comments @500 hrs make sense I bought this one at 170 hrs after testing in a boat too big. He needed more speed and I got it for 30% of new price.
A mechanic mate told me pretty much the same re hours, he also said the effective life of an outboard is about the same?? seemed a bit tough after spending 20k on an etech I,d reckon.
thanks for your info . Kit
