Throwing Berley land based. Just throw?

Hi guys, I've made a thread about this before but I didn't want to necro it. Plus, it's slightly different.

I've realised that I can't really control my berley so there's no point.

Can I just throw some chook pellets and tuna oil in front of where we are fishing? Will it pretty much just fan out in front of where we are? Or do I have to be wary of it drifting completely sideways and taking the fish away from me?

I figure since the trail might run in the wrong direction, it'll still be strongest where it's closest to us so it should be alright.

Looking for some opinions :-)

Get a berley cage on a light rope and use that.

The smell and small particles will drift with the current and hopefully attract fish to the source - right in front of you where your lines are.

No different to in a boat

Don't try and overthink it too much, burley just helps to get whatevers around into feeding mode. Rough rule of thumb, the deeper or more current you are fishing the more focused and deeper the burley needs to be. With 2plus knots of current in 20 metres a burley bomb on the bottom is the best choice. Nil current in 2 metres then throwing handfulls of chook pellets far and wide will work.

With a spare rod or light rope tie on a can of cat food with some holes punched in it and cast it where you want it is an easy one. There are a ton of ways to distribute burley effectively just depends on the circumstances.

Where do you buy cheap chook pellets? Pet stores generally have a premium on their things.

Will berley mean we should cast close or doesn't it matter? I like to flick lures while my dad likes to cast far. Will burley make it harder for him to catch something farther out?

If you want to buy anything pet or livestoc related you are better off going to a produce agent or store... much cheaper.

as for the burley.....it will all depend on where you are fishing and how.

there are a number of little burley devices you can hang on the end of your line, cages, springs.....

you basiclay rig a patensota rig, and the burly device goes on the end with or replacing your sinker.

this way the burley is right where your bait is.

the cages you use pellets or whatever.

the springs you make up a pudding and squeese it into the spring.

I thought you needed a continuous trail of berley though? Would sticking some near your bait attract fish? I imagine it'd get the pickers fired up first

I'll ask my dad to give it a go since he fishes paternoster style usually

My old man scored a burley sling shot from the UK somewhere. Its just what you need. A normal slingshot with a bit of a pouch will work. Just make up a burley of cooked rice ,bran, tuna oil and soaked chook pellets and mix together. Pull out and roll into slingshot size balls and there you have it. Works good in the surf too when chasing Bream etc.

and you just hurl it in the direction you're casting? Not sure if i can hurl as far as i can cast, especially with the same accuracy. Especially something made out of those ingredients.

I know my old man is a bit ancient but your thinking the wrong type of slingshot. Those ingredients can squish together to form a pretty solid ball that can be shot quite a fair way

Hi all,

When it comes to burley off the bank, I usually get all my left over bait from last session, run it through the old blender with some fish oil (DO NOT DO THIS TO THE MRS BRAND NEW BLENDER!!! BAD JUJU!!! ) then grab an ice cream container half filled with chicken pellets, mix them, shake them and throw out handfuls across the bank i am fishing before the tide comes in. That way the burley on the bank gets picked up by the incoming tide and you have a pretty continuous flow of burley.

When i go whiting fishing at my favorite location i go there at low tide and bury about 6 inches under the sand the berley i have on hand. come back on the rising tide once there is about a foot of water over the berley patch and the whiting will be milling there looking for the food source. That one bit of berley will work the entire incoming tide and the first half of the runout.

Generally i used cooked prawn shells or fish scraps after filletting.

This works well even in surf zones like double island point or frazer, bury it about a foot deep in surf areas though.

Works well with pureed pillies with fish oils added too, really concentrates the tailor in your area.

If your rockfishing I seldom cast very far at all, just lob it in the wash the will do unless your after tuna or snapper. My favorite berley is bran, doesnt go bad or smell and sinks well if you add a bit of water.

I think I have an old food processor. How fresh does the bait/fish need to be? What if its left over cooked fish, is that still okay?

The burying idea is genius! Never come across that before!! Will definitely have to remember to use that thanks!!

I don't get to go to places with a lot of wash... just never found a spot like that before. What would you suggest for a rock fishing at a spot without as much wash nearby? Or should I just changed places


Also, if i use a fish carcas and just tie it off in front of me, does it matter what type of carcass and how fresh it is? I tried with a aus salmon carcas once but it didn't really work.. got it from a fish and chip shop. It was a few days frozen.
