    Boat Sales Scam

    Ausfish Members
Their is a scam going on with certain on line popular sales sites of boats with a company or individual advertising extremly cheap boats, they state their mobile number does not work and ask for you to e mail them. Once e mailed they state the boats in Darwin and they need payment before they ship it. Be very weary it is almost like one of those Nigerian scams once they have your number they dont stop ringing and threatening.

As the old saying goes if it is to good to be true it normally is

    cheers

I also asked for info by email on a very well priced Grady White that was 'supposedly' located at Chermside. They didnt offer a number, and boatpo*int got back to me by email informing me that the ad was dodgy. I have received a few emails since from the seller, that I have deleted. If I get another one I will post it with the email address.

    Re: Boat Sales Scam

    G'day,

I've posted on this before and got canned. Here goes again.

The NT is the only State/Territory in OZ that does not have a vessel registration scheme. Therefore if your BMT is nicked and never recovered it left the country in a container or got trucked to the NT.

If you buy a boat in the NT and bring it down here and it is promptly repossessed it is your own fault - not that of the NT government that refuses to join a national protocol and stands by (blindly?) watching and condoning theft and corruption. Don't buy anything out of the NT unless previous owners sale invoices with contact details are provided - irrespective of dealer or private sales.

If you live in the NT and buy a boat in the NT without tracing its provenance and later have a charge of buying stolen property made against you, when you try to insure it, it's your fault - and your government's.

I'm sorry if you folk in the NT are offended by this, but a registration scheme in NT would reduce our insurance premiums. Too much is being lost and never recovered and it's an organised crime.

    Regards,

Its an ongoing issue...unfortuantely it must work for the scammers from time to time as they obviously haven't given up...and the MO still the same..."use e-mail to contact me as I am difficult to contact / overseas / bla bla bla, boat is in storage / at my brothers place / pay deposit now etc"

I dont think you can blame the NT for not having rego on boats for insurance premium costs. The HIN# is what is tracable, when I lived up there an organized crime ring was steeling quintrex boats, replating them with stolen quintrex plates and moving them interstate, most of the stolen boats that were recovered were in SA and Qld, some were in NSW and Vic and some were never recovered. This crime ring was across the entire country and some people were employed by quintrex and others were from quintrex dealerships. This kind of activity can go on anywhere in the country and to blame it all on the NT's no rego policy is a big call.

    G'day,

Boat manufacturers put the HIN on a main member in the hull somewhere. It is also stamped on the Boat Builder's Plate. The registration of these is lodged with NSW Maritime and that creates the unique ID of the boat that all States and Territories can access for traceability.

If the plate doesn't match the HIN on the hull you're in strife.

It's a simple system and it works.

I went to Melbourne last year and bought a very low KM 1993 Peugeot 405 from a Melbourne car dealer. Despite having a Queensland issued Vehicle Safety Certificate, Queensland Transport insisted on seeing the car and checking out the VIN and engine numbers before they would register it. It checked out.

I have no complaints about Government having processes that stamp out theft and ensure that cars, boats, aircraft, etc have a legitimate provenance.

If it's good enough for cars, it's good enough for boats. The NT government needs to get a grip on reality. They are a weak link and it's about time our insurers called them to account.

    Re: Boat Sales Scam

Point Taken, but can you tell me where these HIN numbers are located (stamped) onto hulls, I would like to see them. Have owned many boats over the years, new ones and ones that I have completely refurbished. Never seen a HIN anywhere but on the builders plate. If any one can how me it would be great. I know some boat manufactures were/are toying with using the data dot system, this may add some tracability to boat hulls, but I believe the cost of using this system is very high.
