ie yep, right. If it's a 6kg knobby then you must have fat hands mate because your hand is near as big as the fish...or....how come your arms are stretched out the front of ya....or....the bloody brag mat is folded...it goes from 23.3cm to 28.9cm..
    I've seen them all here

All a bit of light hearted fun
    Hey finga

with this lot .... would you be prepared to put up a dodgy pic ---------- - -

As for old photos ...... I think that most people would have already posted a photo of their special captures ......... I have

I dont like the idea of line class either, just another complication. With tag and release maybe that can be organised by someone with experience in that field ( anyone to put there hand up for that one ). So nagg does that mean you would be interested in looking after the fresh water species and put a list together. While i am going, jeremy and noelm, do you want to split some of the saltwater species with me ? . Photos could be PMed to the person keeping tally of that species and the current leader updated weekly, say on a monday night ( would help if the thread was a sticky as well. How about it mods ) with a list of leaders done for each month. At the end of the year a list of winners put up and start again for the next year. A bit of work but hey i am nearly living on this site now ( so my wife says ) and most of it can be done on a spread sheet at home. What do you all think, is anyone else keen to lend a hand.
Lets see what transpires before I jump in
    My 5 cents
We need it to be a sticky ....... with the list of eligible fish (popular species)
members can post their photos ( & little report) - then maybe each month the fish can be reviewed & voted on ( just in case there is a similar length but the condition is better ....... or dare I say it ....... a better story

    Just to make it fun

a little off topic but how and when did this garbage about measurement to the fork come into vogue...I always thought that fish measurements in Qld were to the end of the tail????

Hey how bout a real simple idea.

You have post "fish photo comp - June" for example. Everyone can post their favorite photo. It can be any species, any size, any location, any style of fishing....whatever you like

then the mods pick their 10 favorite pics at the end of each month and put up a poll....everyone gets a week or so a vote for their favorite pic.

    Most VOTES wins......very easy

That way theres no rules, regulations....or WORRIES!!!

    cheers Steve

Measuring to the fork is easier .......

    Then

It is more accurate . .... Try measuring a thin forked tail fish like a threadfin , trevally , mackerel , queenfish etc
On a mat ..... its just a case of nose & tail fork ( tip on a convex tail) - right over the measurement marks on a mat or ruler........ easy

    &

less ...... open to conjecture ( if thats the word)

    Chris

PS ...... Its just my opinion , but I am surprised that the regs don't state measuring to the folk

Easiest to pick a few species only and to alleviate any discussion about old photos just specify that some item has to be placed on the brag mat to be eligible. For instance you say your car/boat keys have to be on the mat or two spare hooks or something silly like that. What it is can be changed down the track to ensure its not used again. Won't stop a photoshop job but dishonest people get caught out eventually anyway.

Re: Ausfish fish of the year ????

Well from the suggestions made hows this for starters. All catches will be length only to the fork of the tail. A catch is legal if photo is either 1. Taken on a digi camera with the date on the image, 2. Image provided is verified by another ausfish member 3. Taken on a brag mat or similar with a nominated item on the brag mat for each month. All photos to be taken on a brag mat or tape measure.

At the end of each week the list of species leaders can be updated ( prob monday night ). At the end of each month there can be a 1,2,3 of the biggest fish or maybe just the biggest for each species. Fresh start at the begining of the next month but the biggest gets added to a yearly list. Pretty simple i think. Not fool proof but it may get the ball rolling. There could be a fresh and salt water list. If people want game fish included that could be organised by someone else who knows what they are doing.

So mods can this be a sticky if it gets up and going..........

AND is anybody willing to put there hand up to share the load. Ie some one do the fresh water and maybe an extra hand to help with the saltwater. What do you think.

After a rethink catagories could be
    1. All fresh water species including impoundment caught barra.
    2. Estuary / beach species. Bream, whiting, salt barra etc
    3. Offshore species. Pearlies, snapper, mackeral etc
    4. LBG species ???

I think its a great idea, and it will fly, as long as you keep it simple. I think just keep it to 'photo of the month' in classes of offshore, estuary, and fresh.

I dont think you can expect everyone to carry a brag mat or know how to date stamp a photo. Encouraging everyone to have a go, is more important than rules. I dont think youre gonna have too many problems with dodgy photos, cos we all know who can be trusted by now, and who would be sus. If youve been catching snappa in the bay and posting them for ages, then Im not gonna query it when you put up a big one. Theres plenty of photoshop experts here who know how to spot a fake anyway.

Just keep it simple, and let any rules 'evolve' over time.

Now you need a judging panel.....whos gonna volunteer? They need to be people who spend a lot of time on Af, so theyll see all the posts.

Next you need a sponsor. How about a new rod for the winner? Its been done on other fishing sites with no problems at all.

I was thinking that we should have 'best thread' awards too. Theres been some crackers....

    cheers

It is going to take a hell of a lot of time to do just the basics if this gets up and running.
Why not just a general fishing picture of the month and it could be anything to do with fishing. it would save a lot of arguing on old or new or legit or not and save having to find the car keys or 2 bob bit to put on the brag mate to take a picture
The list every month could be shrunk to say 4 pictures or 6 pictures with 3 pictures of ripper fish and 3 pictures of people catching fish and an easy poll done.
The picture of the year can be decided by poll as well.

To me the picture Scalem put up with his disabled mate catching fish on a pond is a better then seeing Webby with another 15kg Snapper but the picture of the Grassy Webby caught last year was just mind blowing.
Consider why a lot of pictures Uncle Frank (Frank OO) puts up are just rippers. They are all good fish in their own rights but the looks on the peoples faces (usually very green novices) also adds to the whole picture.
Also the story behind the picture needs to be considered.
An example of that is another reason why Scalem's pictures of his mate were good. He gave up a day's fishing in his brand spanking new boat to let a mate have a good day at a pond.
Just my opinion which means nothing at all when it all boils down though.
I intend on living for-ever....so far so good
