    Swains Tackle

So far it looks like I am going to Swains reef between the 19th and 26th september. I was just wondering what gear everyone used up there? I am only a student so I am on a budget (probably around 600-700 for rods, reels etc.) so far I have seen the penn slammer liveliner series of reels. Would this be a suitable reel for drift baiting for macks and also bottom bashing? And has anyone used a penn Gti outfit at Swians? I am just after any tips on what gear to take. Thanks Jared

I am fishing Swains on Norkat 2 from 20/8 to 28/8/09 and will post when I get home I am taking a Tiagra 30LWRS loaded with 60lb fins on a 24kg backbone roller tip rod for bottom bashing/drifting. For casting poppers and baits in the shallows from the dories I am taking a Stella 10000SW loaded with 50lb fins on either a 15-24kg T Curve or an Avaya in same class. I have a 2 speed Shimano TLD30 and a stradic 4000 as backup. Will throw in a big old hand line as well. I have 80 & 100 lb leader, heaps of poppers balloons spare trebbles split rings split ring pliers braid scissors knives & the list goes on & on & on They supply hooks and full range of sinkers on the boat. Hope this helps

Jared, are you on a charter, if so they should provide gear for the area, if it is your first time use there gear, this will give you an idea for future trips without the outlay.
The problem with buying your own deep sea gear is it sits idle for a long time. The charter will probably have gear for bottom bashing, an 8-10kg setup & mabye a jigging outfit.

    Jared,
My father has used the same GTi penn reel for the last 5 years doing swains charters, I gave mine up after the first, I just wanted something better. Match it to a 6-7' rod and it will be fine for big boat work, macks and all that. I prefer spinning outfits for dory work and use a spheros 12000 and 6 1/2' live fibre 10-15kg rod. There are plenty of other rods and reels in this range that will be cheaper and do the same job, example look at the Penn 850/950 reels. Load both outfits up with Braid or mono (whatever suits you) at 50lb or better and take 60/80lb leader, small ball sinkers and a heap of 7/0 or 8/0 hooks and you'll catch just as much as the rest.
Some go overboard with the gear they take (ME) and end up using about half if your lucky.

Have a look at ##########s Diablo if cash is tight.Top reel for the outlay(80lb braid),
10 year warranty.Top end quality at a average mans price.Rapt with mine,Paid $320 for it and am not looking back.
And a Aussie company to boot.

    G'day JL,

Yep, the 330gti is a good choice for the Swains, the combo will serve you fine. you could load it with up to 80lb braid on a 15-24kg rod.

A 560 slammer on a 10-15 kg spin stick for plastics

You may consider aan 850 spinfisher or 760 slammer on a 7'6" medium/heavy action rod as a handy weapon to have with you too, floating big baits, casting to structure with large baits and pinging big a$$ poppers around. That sould cater for most situations you will encounter.

    Cheers
