My usual practice is to catch sufficient bream in the season to last until almost the next season. My family won't eat anything else. If a Jew is caught I have to give it away. Nor do I bother with flathead etc.

Each to his own, I guess, but fishing for fun (catch and release) seems a bit cruel to me. It is still relatively easy to catch 100 bream per session but why bother putting in the effort and stressing seventy fish for no real reason.

One bonus with the catch limit is that there won't be a need to pump 300 yabbies per day. Just think, 15 minutes of pumping and you will have enough yabbies to catch the new 'in possession' rules.

Life gets easier every day. I will be doing a lot of reading and relaxing so it's not all bad.
So, go fishing once every couple of weeks and top up your supplies? Surely you don't eat 30 fish per person per fortnight.

The other option is to cut out the effort required and just purchase your fish from a shop/market, or do you actually enjoy the fishing? If so, see my previous paragraph.

The problem, Chamelion, is that in winter I normally spend two to three weeks on the boat with a one week break in between. So I have a lot of time on my hands.

Every few days I meet my wife at the ramp and hand over the catch.

The winter season is very short. For the remainder of the year I just go to the boat and walk the beaches, relax and, maybe, catch a few whiting and sand crabs for a feed on the boat.

Even though I might catch a lot of bream in the season, it's not a great deal when averaged over the year.

Because of the new regulations I will just have to comply whether I agree with them or not.

We never buy fish from the shop/market because we have never had to.

Fishing is something I enjoy very much. These new regulations will see me trying for a greater variety. I can do still do the numbers and will make up for the lack of bream with gar, dart, tailer, luderick etc., and hope that the family will appreciate fish other than bream. They haven't before but I live in hope.

good luck on your trip and please post your report as it helps me with my winter "game plan" for that area.
I'll try WK though some might not welcome a healthy report.

From what I've heard, the bream are beginning to run so bagging out should not be a problem anywhere at the Pin. Being lazy I prefer Tigermullet channel but Kalinga should be fired up and, perhaps, even better.

Lots of bait fish are around so the Jew should also be on the prowl.

    Good luck.

The world is absolutely full of arseholes wanting everyone else to join in the programme, in other words, their agenda, no matter how deluded it might be.

Why they so earnestly seek to foist their ideas on to others is a mystery to me.

Politically correct attitudes, global warming or climate change seems to be the new religion and no one dare criticise the stance without being classed as a heretic.

However, I'm slowly becoming more tolerant of dark complexioned, Catholic, Victorians with confused sexual persuasion, studying Sociology at Monash.

Given that, perhaps I am not all bad.

TM, don't let anyone deter you from reporting, there's a lot of us who love to read them so as long as you're within your legal limitations, which at this point is 23cm and NO baglimit, then post away! I know under the 'Reports' section, the Mod's are toughening up on unpleasentaries targeted at 'legal' activities...

I too have never understood the art of enjoying sinking a sharp object into a live creature, dragging it in against its will, manhandling it while it gasps for (fish) breath, then putting it back in with a scar/hole in its mouth for the shock of its life - and all for the pleasure of enjoyment?!?!?! And this is acceptable but taking a feed (regardless of quantity) is not?!

I think that Kercus is correct because I remember reading on the DPI website earlier this year that the size and bag limits on Bream would not be introduced until 1st March 2010.

By extension, that would also make T1 correct

That information has been withdrawn but, until a few days ago, I remained convinced that 1st March 2010 was the date.

Tomorrow, if I can find the time I will phone the Boating and Fishing Patrol just to be sure.

I expect to get a load of public service speak but that's ok because I am very used to interpreting that crap.

Being an ex public servant has its advantages.

    Hi TG,

Probably the easiest way to tell is have a look at the latest Fisheries Regulations 2008 (22 May 2009 reprint), Schedule 2, Part 3 Fish regulated by number separately and in combination. Page 451 lists the rules as they stand now for "pikey bream, tarwhine or yellowfin bream or a combination of these fish" (http://www.legislation.qld.gov.au/LE.../FisherR08.pdf)

Whether or not the QLD Boating and Fisheries Patrol are allowing a grace period as stated by Kercus is something you'll have to ask them though. Not sure about that one.

It's the new size limits (ie. 25cm) that are the ones changing in March next year.

    cheers

think its time to find a new site this ones full of defacto greenies, with reports like these fish hooks will be soon banned.

Re: Bag limit on bream this year?

I like eating them too, i just don't stop fishing though after I've caught enough to eat. I'm must be one of those sadistic people who like catching fish for the fun of it.

Most of the time i just love the places fishing gets me, couldn't care less sometimes if i catch a fish or not.

I think this thread is getting a bit heated when it was never meant to be. If you want to go catch your bag limit, thats fine. The bag limits are in place to help protect the fishery to an extent. I would rather take a precautionary approach to fisheries management and have some fish for my kids to catch in the future.

also, I don't eat a lot of fish so i personally think the bag limits are too high (ie. they wouldnt affect me much). TG (and his family) eat quite a bit of fish by the sounds of it so he might think they are ok, and thats ok too. Just peoples personally points of view. Nothing to get riled up about.

You bloody cane toads get too much of a good thing. NSW has a 20 bream bag limit. Bloody whingers; and your glamour Origin football team didn't look too flash last night either. The rumour is that Bill Harrigan can now eat free in any seafood restaurant in QLD after inventing some microscopic blade of grass that Jarryd Hayne supposedly stepped on when you fiddled us out of Origin 1.

T1 - you are wrong PAL!!..bag limit of 30 per person in possession came in march this year, the minimum size is increasing to 25 cms march 2010...

TM - go and catch your LEGAL bag limit and post your results on this site mate, as i, and others who have read this post and are shaking our heads at these "high & mighty" do-gooders, will APPRECIATE the feedback..

maybe these guys that are against bag limits have never got there themselves????
