Well done JJ ..... you done good!
Anyone that has fished the stones for snapper know that the best fishing occurs during or straight after a big blow ( big fish come in close). ...... & yes occy was always the prime bait
It can be risky fishing but the rewards can be substantial.
One day you will wise up ...... & say to yourself "F^@% did I really fish there ???" ...... & you'll then go & buy a boat![]()
In the mean time take care & keep posting ......... It took me back 25 years
Cheers
Chris
Give a man a fish & he will eat for a day !
Teach him how to fish
& he will sit in a boat - & drink beer all day!

JJ.
I would like to see your DIY Alvey.
I use a 650 GRBC off the rocks, but I need a new main gear on mine and haven't been able to get over to the factory to get one since I last used it.
Thanks JJ.
I am interested having a look at the reels.
ok here are the reels first is a 7.5 inch made out of mango and cedar spliced wood, with mangrove handles, worn down on the wood lathe, my dad does all the metal work on the metal lathe but im workin my way up there, i do all the wood turning and splicing i figure because im younger and my eye sights better i have more of a delicat touch, second is a 6 inch cant remember what it was made out of it was made 3 years ago ill have to ask my dad, and 3rd is the handline i use for my bay snapper, we have about 10 more that we use for different reasons made out of a few different types of wood, they look fantastic and i always get asked where i bought that hahaha so that makes me smile and landing a big fish on a rod and reel you made makes everything worth it![]()

Very nice indeed JJ!
Do you have to be a bit more careful with them on the rocks etc, they probably wouldn't be as durable as the Alvey.
How do you go with dents and chips etc.
Again, very nice, your old boy does a top job!
Jeff.
YEAH..!!
They are BLOODY nice JJ.![]()
I am a big alvey fan...they are very impressive.
Pete
well when you chip 1 what you do is go into a fit of rage then you cry, its happened twice to me so what we did is take them of the backing place turn them down till the chips gone knock up a new backing plate and away you go a snapper reel turns into a whitting reel lol then you make a new reel for the snapper backing plate, we alway carry them in sock bags and we look after our gear and though not as strong as your usual alvey you would be suprised at what it takes to chip one
Very nice reels JJ. What do you finish them with?

Best "Alveys" I've ever seen JJ.
Beautiful laminating work.
You guys are really something special!
Cheers.
i beleive its just a wood vanish, though not sure exactly its in an old tin and i usually use a paint brush to apply it ill ask my dad what exactly it is, a new spinning reel is in the planning i think ill do it a single wood type this time for something different![]()
Yeh they are cool JJ. They are some pretty flush joins in the timber work. I would find it hard to use them, i would be scared to mark them. I dont suppose you make your own hooks out of whale bone as wellThat would top it off.
no i buy my hooks hahaha but have thought about it lol not with whale bone, though do you recon dugong would work? haha
That harlequin reel is a cracker. A lot more work in those than meets the eye - a credit to you guys.![]()
Lookout JJ, You might just have found yourself a way to make a buck, top notch, real sidecast porn to those of us that are Alvey nuts, Cheers !!
