Water is releasing from both dams and Pine River is flowing very strongly. Stay tuned for fish rescue info.
just a thought guys as a person who grew up in petrie and lived here all my life alot of people go up to north pine to colect and release fish but most people forget about lake kurwongbah. spent many afternoons as a kid dragging buckets of turtles and spangled perch up the spill way , just as much time bludgeoning sometimes very huge tilapia too lol makes me feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside.

Phil,
I too am a Petrie boy, going up on Beeville road (we were the 3rd house in the street)
I remember fishing the lower rock pools after the spill way over flowed. Additionally rescuing turtles and returning them to the lake. I was involved in the construction of the Petrie Scout Den up on the hill, and we spent many an off hour down at the rock pools. It's a pity that SEQ Water is fencing the area off. But there are still ways to get around the fences.
Might have to take a trip down there this weekend and show the kids where I grew up and let them help rescue some of the turtles etc.

I love the sound of reels screaming in the morning
might go throw a lure or 2 around as well...
Phoned SEQwater who confirmed commenced controlled water relase from NPD at 6pm last night and will continue until noon Friday. By then they will have decided whether or not to continue.
Gave them my mobile # as they said that they would give me an update on Friday.
I'm hoping they decide to keep releasing water untill at least Sat morning as it would make easier for a fish rescue!!
Re the fencing off at LKD, I can understand their desire to keep people away especially when it's overflowing. I'm sure that if the PRFMA explained that they wanted access to rescue natives & get rid of noxious fish, access would be granted.

Quick update - NPD is at 100% with controlled releases, Somerset is at 106.37% and still expecting big inflows - spillway will be opened for the first time in 15 years today - and Wivenhoe is at 55.67% and rising.
Total Brisbane supply is now at 72.02% and still rising but with only showers predicted over the next few days...
Pete
Hi shayned,
I've send you an email.
Luc
I think its great that all the dams are filling up,please correct me if I am wrong but wasnt wivenhoe built for flood mitigation and as such do we want it full?kinda defeats the purpose of why it was built?
So far it looks like toowoomba missed most of the really good falls, thats a shame as they really need the water.

SEQWater's Dams
SEQWater owns and manages three water supply storages/dams, which are vital to the continuing prosperity, lifestyle and urban development of south-east Queensland.
- [ Overview ]
- [ Wivenhoe Dam ]
- [ Somerset Dam ]
- [ North Pine Dam ]
Wivenhoe Dam
Wivenhoe Dam (Lake Wivenhoe) is located on the Brisbane River in Esk Shire. Storage capacity for water supply (full supply level) is 1,165,000 megalitres, with a further capacity of 1,450,000 megalitres above full supply level (flood storage), for the temporary storage of flood waters.
Wivenhoe Dam is an earth and rock fill dam, with a centrally located, steel radial gated, concrete spillway. Lake Wivenhoe, which is the body of water formed by the dam, is also the lower storage for a 500-megawatt hydro-electric power station, owned by Tarong Energy Corporation. A mini hydro- electric generating plant was constructed by Stanwell Corporation on the outlet works of the dam during 2002.
Water is released from Wivenhoe Dam into Brisbane River and is extracted at the Mt Crosby Water Treatment Plant operated by Brisbane Water. This treated water is supplied to the greater Brisbane area.
Somerset Dam
Somerset Dam (Lake Somerset) is located on the Stanley River, in Esk and Kilcoy Shires, at the upstream limit of Wivenhoe Dam storage. Storage capacity for water supply is 380,000 megalitres, with a further storage of 524,000 megalitres above the full supply level for the temporary storage of flood waters.
Rando, thanks for clearing that one up for me.
Cheers Craig

I am not 100% sure but I think I read somewhere that it took just over 6 year for Wivanhoe to go from full to a level that required water restrictions.
If the Global warming proponents are right, and droughts are going to be longer and more severe Then I reacon we want her as full as she can get. There is plenty of reserve storage capacity.
