North Pine Dam - will it overflow

According to the latest SEQwater update, NPD is at 83.67% an increase of 10.501% since yesterday.

With further rain and inflows from the NP River & Kobbble Creek for the next few days, will we see NPD at 100%+

It would be great to see the river below the dam get a good flush out.

Also, given that is mid May, we could see a fair number of bass including some big girls take the plunge over the wall to breed.

It's a shame that once the breding's done, there's no way for them to return to the dam.

I would be surprised of it does'nt overflow, its at more than 80% full now, radar shows its bucketing down on the catchments.
The resevoir on Tingalpa creek should overtop as well.
Its not just the bass that will go over the wall.
Unfortunately all those Tilapia will be spilled as well. The ones in the impoundment in Minippi park will probably get their freedom also
on the upside I guess the gar will also hit the estuaries and add to the food chain.
I wonder what all those pests will do to the environment.
DPI should net the slipways and only release the desirables.

    Hi Rando,

Given that the last lot of rain put 30%+ in NPD, I think it's certain that this lot will make it overflow.

Unfortunately, every rain/flood event allows tilapia to spread further. I would not be surprised if the South Pine & Saltwater Creek are next.

I beleive that eventually, almost all coastal waterway in Qld will carry population of tilapia as major rain/flood events allows them to spread south from places further north (eg Townsville).

Just imagine, tilapia in the Noosa, Maroochy, Mooloolaba, etc.. Even the Gold Coast systems won't be spared.

Luc, was up the catchment early this morning there was so much standing water on the ground trying to get into the creek it was flooding everywhere. There is much more water flowing at Apex park, the swings are well under water. So I would say that SEQ better get some grease ready to lube up those gates. Just got back from checking out the dam wall area, not much more to go before it goes over the gates, probably a metre. Not much area left a bullocky rest for a picnic.

As of half an hour ago the dam was 36cm from full supply. They will hold off I suppose once full as it will cause major flooding if the river below is still in flood.

Re: North Pine Dam - will it overflow

Last time North Pine overflowed a lot of fish went over the wall. In the following days many fish were trapped in small receeding pools in the 300mts between the foot of the wall and the Grant St Crossing. At first quite a few of us were catching them in landing nets or our hands and carrying them in buckets up to the car park where the rangers had in a ute full of nally bins, we pulled out mainly lungies and big bass but at least 2 cod. They then drove them around and put them back in the dam at near McGavin's Veiw. The guys would've done 5 trips so we must've pulled out hundreds of fish. For the next 2 days after that we were catching them and carrying them downstream about 200mts and releasing them in the river propper at the Grant St crossing, at least that gave them a chance and it certainly inproved the fishing it that streatch of the Pine for the next 6 months.
If it happens again and you can spare the time it would be a good idea to rescue some of these fish, I'd probably give it 2 days to settle down first then check it out.
    Cheers

I was down there a short time ago, there seemed to be a lot of News guys hanging around in their trucks. Seems like they might know something we don't, gates were all closed as well.

Mike, I will be there. I was there last time and I do hope there will be a crowd again to help.

Somerset is at 100% and rising too, and has the valves open, they predict it will overflow tonight.

Just had a look at BOM's website and it states that Somerset and North Pine are now over there stated capacity. To me that says they are now full.
With water being pumped out of Somerset and the valves open and flood gates as well, Big W should get a very big top up as well.
Combined capacity is now past 67%. Just wish more had gone up the range to Cressbrook and Perserverance Dams. Looks like they got a little but not enough.

Oh crap. I was thinking about heading to somerset this weekend just for the fun of it, but if there's a comp on there then I think I'll leave it well alone.
Think the Bass Electric at Lake MacDonald may possibly be postponed again as well. Its going over the wall, still. Dont think it ever stops.
Might come up and annoy you Al.

I still haven't got a cast in at NPD since I got my permit. I did get over for a look at the ramp and stuff, but I guess it will be looking a lot different when I get down there with my canoe. I suppose this will mean we can get further up (north??) now. I hope we don't lose too many of the fish to the river

Basstasstic is off Bill, I think they may have closed the dam to boats. The spit is definitely closed off ATM. We'll have to catch up later Al.
Bill you shouldn't let a comp chase you off anyway, esp one with only about 15 boats and is run by a nonprofit group to put money into fingerlings.
    Cheers mate
