Mate back in the 70's $4500 was probably considered a lot of money for a car, making that sort of comparison to now days is a bit out there isn't it??

1974 Holden Monaro GTS 4 door 308(my brother's) $4500.00. 1974 Penn International 130 $1200 (my father's). 2009 SS Commodore $50000+ that reel $10000. Not sure what is "out there" about the comparison. My 180B Datsun GL was $4443 on August 28th 1975, but I paid an extra $103 for radial tyres, and the sales tax went up 5% on September 1st.

Back in the early 1970's we were paying about $4500 for a new Holden Monaro and about $1000 for a Penn International 130. 35 years later a new SS is around $50,000, so $10,000 for a reel is comparible. Still bloody expensive though, but when you can spend a few million on a boat, what's 10 grand for a reel?

If you go back 1992 a Hardy Zane Gray 80 series was $13,000 which makes this reel look rather cheap in comparison.

At the same time Fin Nor 12/0 tri gear reels were listed for $3,310.00 & Penn International 130ST 2 speed @ $1760.00. Neither of these two reels had the line capacity of the Hardys.
