    Crab measures take care

Be aware that the platic crab measures have square surfaces, and dont get down into the crab notch V.
If you are on the limit, this gives an incorrect read,as the actual crab is smaller. As has been said before on this site, also keep them out of the sun,for the same reason.
I am going to file down the edges of mine,to a v shape,to match the notch.

    Re: Crab measures take care

My brother normally doesnt fish for crabs, but did so on the weekend, and noticed the problem.
When measure to the notch, they were mm undersize. When measured with the measure, they were OK.

    Re: Crab measures take care

I am getting a batch of stainless steel ones made half a mm oversize at the moment, cut to specific tolerances. These will also be bevelled to fit the carapace notch properly.

these half mm oversize gauges will remove all doubt.

    cheers

    Re: Crab measures take care

Just out of curiosity trueblue, the people who are cutting up your s/s crab measures would they be willing to cut up 1 more........ I would buy one myself. I don't want to get fined for having a crab .5 mm to small. The outlay for the s/s would cover the possible fine caused by using a plastic one !!!!!!
    Cheers Garry

A bad day fishing, beats a good day at work!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I reckon unless you are desperate for a feed , then you don't need a measure, a "just legal" Crab is hardly worth taking (I reckon) so unless it is well over, then I chuck them back.

    Re: Crab measures take care

great idea. I've got a peice of stainless steel sitting in the year. A bit of angle grinder work should see a fine crab measuring device.

    Re: Crab measures take care

I'm getting gauges made with both mud crab and sand crab sizes.

I got sick of the plastic ones blowing off my bait board, and also being nowhere near the actual size (ie +/- 1mm which is not acceptable when fines are involved)

send me a PM if interested. I can still get the batch size increased and price will be better per unit if the batch size is bigger.

    cheers

    G'day Mick,

I'd be interested in getting a stainless steel one for muddies and for blue swimmer.

Can you send me a pm with cost etc.

    Cheers, Peter
