    Re: barra season???

This is a thread which is sure to attract some attention and much debate about the prime time for barra fishing. Many experienced barra fishers will say that barra, particularly impoundment fish, can be caught year round if the correct approach is taken. So simple answer is yes.

    Re: barra season???

And in the saltwater, yes, barra season is "Open". Closures on the East Queensland Coast, in the saltwater take place from Nov 1st at midday to February 1st at midday. A 3 month closure exists each year/season. The closure does not apply to stocked barra in lakes like Awoonga, Faust, Monduran, Tinaroo etc etc etc

    Re: barra season???

The only trouble with having a set closed season to protect the breeding is that it's not always the right time.

In 2008, according to research done by SUNTAG, the barra breeding was all done by November. The barra took advantage of the heavy rain/flooding in Central Qld and went early.

    Re: barra season???

    Luc,
That unfortunately is the double edged sword. I suppose 3 months is a start, and it gives a better than average chance of the majority of fish having the opportunity to spawn undisturbed, and also in other seasons that may be normal/late etc. Having a 4 month closure may create an ugly scene in the fishing circle and still leaves no certainty if mother nature doesn't help out as well.
It's a tough call that one, but atleast barra are quite healthy in number in respect to the closure that is in place at present.
    Cheers,
    JM
