General rule of thumb Phill if it transmitts and recieves it is an Antenna if it just recieves its an aerial.
So antenna = UHF + VHF + HF + 27 meg+ mobile phone
Aerial = TV + Radio
Edit: On second thoughts I better clarify that the aerial that you have on your TV/Radio simply recieves the electromagnetic waves transmitted by the stations antenna. The two terms are pretty much interchangeable and really doesn't matter in real life anyway. This is how I understand it, there may be a full on boffin out there that may correct me.

Hey Chris
you hit the nail on the head mate.

If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing rods.
from what I can remember from my Radio Apprentice days, an aerial is directional, like as in your TV, it needs to be pointed towards the transmitter, but an antenna is none directional, that is it receives and/or transmits in all directions, like your Boat "whip" and radio transmitters.
mind you, that is from my vague recollections of TAFE from more that 30 years ago!! so I could have it arse about, but I don't think so.
So should Ants have Antennae or Aerials
Cheers
Pete
Ants have ANTStenna's other wise they would need to tilt their tiny heads to receive anything!! (maybe)
I wonder, with evolution, if ants receive digital signals now
Cheers

Antenna or aerial... they are the same thing... just different names!
Cheers,
Leigh (Kero).
they terms are interchangeable, but in reality, they are NOT the same thing, as I mentioned earlier, if someone gets a TV antenna put up, you could also call it an aerial, and you will still be clearly understood, even though one is not exactly correct.
Not sure where you're getting your info from Noelm, but if you look up the definition you'll see that they are different names for the same equipment. Not trying to start an argument here BTW .
Anyway I only work in the industry, what would I know (see profile).
Cheers,
Leigh (Kero).
