have to totally agree with Dug. Up here in Gladstone, when you catch them out the front they always spew out tiny little white or silver bait-fish no longer than 3-5cm in length and thats exactly what we match when we throw lures at them. One of my favourites is a 15gm Halco gold twistie that you can throw a mile and also crank back super fast. Ive also caught an 8kg model on a 8m deep diver lure trolling for mackeral.
Dont know what is the best lure but i have been catching them on 40g and 60g lead lures, i make my own from a mold and also use Gillies Bait Fish or River 2 Sea Sea Rock. I like the lead as they are a smaller lure for the weight compared to chrome raiders etc so they can be pelted out further. I had one day a few months back that they hit anything of any size.
I use slugs along the Searock lines rangeing from 10g to about 40g. The 15g white would be my go to Mac Tuna lure if the fish are less than about 3kg

Have caught them on live slimies, yellowtail, slugs up to 45grams and even 7inch Gulp Jerk Shads. Also catch them trolling spoons, skirts and livies. They don't seem to be very fussy.
Are you fishing out of a boat or land-based?
Floating pilchards or strip baits always seem to find them from a boat for me, chrome slices spun fast from the rocks, one gear back from bonito speed and one gear up from tailor speed!
Really, when they are about and on the chew, I've always found them not to fussy, always catch them when fishing for something more palatable!
Having said that, they go hard and make excellent bait.
