    Re: 4WD- towing vehilce

    Tim,

When I first bought Alchemy I bought a 1988 Ford Maverick in petrol. It was a 4.2l carbie job, 5 speed manual air conditioned, cloth seats etc. I paid $8k for it from the auctions out at the old Brisbane airport. No rego, and about 230,000km. Paint was quite faded but it was straight and mechanically ok; ie it didn't need much to get it roadworthy and the mechanic noted it was in good condition for a car of that age. Sure it was thirsty, and towing Alchemy to Hervey Bay saw it drink around 28 - 29l/100km, but it did the job.

I ended up selling it for about $5 or 6k I think, so probably paid too much for it in the first place. If I was after a cheap, capable tow truck then I would be looking at the Patrols and Mavericks.

As a matter of interest, my 2005 4.2TD GU Patrol drinks 25l/100km of diesel towing Alchemy at 100kmh, so the petrol option is not that much worse!

    Regards,
    Dave.

    Thanks Dave

I basically have two options now. a 94 80 series Landcruiser 4.5 with dual fuel or a 1997 prado 3.4 L. Both are petrol. Price wise would be $10,000 and under.

Will be looking hard in the next few weeks. Both cars are around 250,000Km

Im selling my 95 LR Disco V8 on LPG - my wife is useing it as the kid taxi at the moment but Im de-registering it for sale (but test drives before de-registering it) because I dont want the bother and time to get a safety certificate, so its going for $3,500.00 - 275,000k and in very nice condition and fastisiously services. I am getting a lot of interest about it and I only just lited it. I would have thought you could get a very nice toyo for well under 10k...

    Cheers

Either of those would do the job Tim.
The big Landcruiser 80 on gas would be tempting, very capable 4WD, but the V6 Prado is nice as well. Think both of these had discs all round, are they both constant 4WD? Is the 80 a GXL or standard? If it's a standard, should have FWH which will allow 2WD as well as 4WD.
Might come down to which has best service records and optional extras fitted, and which you like to drive the most after test runs.
    Cheers and good luck.
