    Vhf - Shore To Ship

    Hey,

I'm wondering what is required / what set-up do i require to be able to communicate to my offshore mates from shore to ship. I am looking at some how being able to communicate via VHF marine radio somehow, to my buddies that fish off shore from mooloolaba, while I'm based at Brisbane.

Does anyone know how its possible!!!!

I think you need a special class licence to do it legally.

Setting up a land based station is relativly simple.... however you need to have a real good excuse to be licenced to do it legaly..... chatting with some mates, i don;t think will cut it.

yeh and from sunnybank......your reception wont be real flash.....particularly to " of shore"

    cheers
Its the details, those little details, that make the difference.

Because we use marine band VHF, it is actually illegal to sit in your boat at home and use it to converse with your mates. (so I was told at a radio course years ago)

If your house is in a nice high position you might get the range?.Next time your mates are out see if you can raise them in your boat at home.

For a house set up you will need a good aerial with a long cable extension so it can reach fron your roof to where you want to put your unit. Also you need a transformer to convert fron 240 to 12v.Make sure your transformer puts out enough watts for you to transmit from your unit as some of the budget ones dont.

ps my aerial is bolted to my foxtel dish

    Loozitt:

    FYI...

Neither class licences nor a MF/HF ship station (class B) licience authorises the operation of a "home base". Except in special cases, marine radio equipment in private residences will not be authorised by the Australian Communication Media Authority (AMCA)..

Plain language.. The radios not a toy or cheap alternative to a mobile phone. Can you imagine is everyone started doing what you want to do.. forget the distress calls for Mayday!.. There'd be no channel free from the "galauh sessions"

Sometimes i will sit on the back deck on the weekends early in the morning while i have my coffee and listen on my handheld unit.It will pick up VMR Straddy, Seaway tower goldy,VMR Sandgate,Bribie all manner from the bay and north of the Cape. Most of the transmisions are clear and without crackle. The boat works fine to Coast Gaurd Redcliffe when getting radio check.Location Moorooka.Jim
