Fix or Toss
I have a 1978 70hp Jonnie on the boat i just bought, and have read about guys rebuilding there motors. From the feedback i have received here and elsewere i believe that these motors are near bullet proof. Is the cost of rebuilding as opposed to buying a second hand newer motor (i can't afford a new one) a viable option. I'm handy with the tools and have the workshop manual, is it worth the drama (finding parts etc. for this age motor) or as they say.....Am I dreamin
cheers

It depends on what needs doing! If you rebuild the motor, at least you'll know that it's good. If you buy another 2nd hand one, you're buying an unknown motor!

Pull it apart first, IMO the aluminium was far better back then compared to now, still it will hinge on the degree of corrosion evident.
Pretty sure those engines didn't change much, but I think they did change at some relatively early point to fix a known problem, forget now.
If the level of corrosion makes it worth your while and you do rebuild it, better plan on keeping it for the next 15 years...that's cheap boating at say 30-50hours a year running time.
