    boat trailer

    hey guys,
i recently purchased a runabout and noticed the trailer could do with a bit of work. It is structurally good no extensive amounts of rust cracks etc. it just has a bit of surface rust. So far i have replaced the wheels, mudgaurds, bearings and rollers im just wanting some advice on removing the surface rust, keeping it rust free and what paint would be best suited for it.
    any help is greatly appreciated
    thanks

well only real way to remove surface rust is to abrade it off... this means either a surface grinder, belt sander, or sand blasting (or similar). Once all off you need a good metal primer (suitable for the job) and then some kind of overcoat... Could be simply paint, or some of the more extravagant top coats or cold galvanising paints (obviously a better option that standard paint alone).

    Re: boat trailer

your better off using a brush, cheaper and a lot thicker application, just make sure you get into all the nooks and crannies, a good way to remove the surface rust is a stainless wire brush attatchment for a 4" angle grinder. it might also be an idea to treat the affected areas with a rust converter befor priming.
    cheers

you could just use Gal bar. when we have to repair or modify Gal jobs at work thats what we use and to finish it off just quick spray of cold gal.

    Re: boat trailer

Go to a specialist paint shop mate.
They are around. They will have big cans of the gal paint.

My trailer is coated in the stuff and it seems to work alright. Not rusting half as fast as you might expect

Forgot to mention, the paint shop near me has a great range and I am sure they would probably have galv paint too... It's called the Paint Place...

Since you are out bayside, here is your closest one:

    Paint Place Wynnum
    Shop 1
    280 Tingal Road
    Wynnum QLD 4178
    Tel: (07) 3893 2643

Give em a call and see if they have any available.

Yea its not to bad... i just think it could do with a bit of a paint to make it look better and prevent further corrosion
